Edgar Allan Poe Essay By Elizabeth

Edgar Allan Poe is a very well known writer today. He was born in 1809, on January 19 in Boston Massachusetts.  His parent’s names were Elizabeth and David Poe. He also had a brother and sister. When Edgar was six, he went to England to go to a school which he finished when he was eleven. Early in his life, Edgar Allan Poe was orphaned when his dad abandoned his family and  his mother died.  Later, he joined the army, but to do so, he had to lie about his age. When Mr. Poe was 26, he married one of his cousins who was 13 years old.  His wife was named Virginia Clemm, to allow  Edgar to marry her, they had to say that she was 21 years old.  Edgar Allan Poe wrote many stories and poems, but the thing he was mostly known for in his lifetime was being a critic for writing.  At age forty, right before his death, someone found him outside, delirious and was taken to the doctor.  Edgar later died on October 7Th, 1849, of a cause that is still unknown today.  some of Edgar Allan Poe’s work are the Raven and the Tell Tale Heart.

Edgar Allan Poe is known as the father of horror stories. One horror story that he wrote is called the Tell Tale Heart. It is about a servant who kills his master and then keeps thinking that he was hearing his master’s heart beating when it was really his own. There are several things that make it a horror story, and which also makes Edgar Allan Poe the father of horror stories.  First, he used a lot of description, especially in the eleventh paragraph, even though there’s lots of it in the other paragraphs too.  The description makes the story more scary and it helps people picture the scary parts better.  Also he often repeats words which emphasises them and increases the scariness.  For example, this is the first half of the eleventh paragraph:
“But even yet I refrained and kept still. I scarcely breathed. I held the lantern motionless. I tried how steadily I could maintain the ray upon the eye. Meantime the hellish tattoo of the heart increased. It grew quicker and quicker, and louder and louder every instant. The old man’s terror must have been extreme! It grew louder, I say, louder every moment! –do you mark me well? I have told you that I am nervous: so I am. And now at the dead hour of the night, amid the dreadful silence of that old house, so strange a noise as this excited me to uncontrollable terror. Yet, for some minutes longer I refrained and stood still. But the beating grew louder, louder! I thought the heart must burst. And now a new anxiety seized me –the sound would be heard by a neighbor! The old man’s hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room.”
The last thing I would like you to know about Edgar Allan Poe as a horror writer, is that he used very good vocabulary.  For example, when he said that the strange noise was very scary, he used the words: “uncontrollable terror”. Those are the reasons why Edgar Allan Poe was the father of horror stories, which made him a very successful writer.

Edgar Allan Poe was a very successful writer for a number of reasons.  One reason that I think that he was a successful writer is that his stories were unique at that time, so everyone wanted to read them.  Also, he wrote lots of different pieces, so some of them ended up getting published.  I think that he chose very good titles for his stories and poems.  One of his stories that he had a particularly well chosen title is The Tell Tale Heart. I think that the title is a good one because it is very mysterious and unique.  It is mysterious because it makes you start wondering what the heart has to do with anything.  I am not sure what gave him the idea for the plot in the story, but I have some guesses.  One guess is that he once heard his own heart beating loudly and thought it was someone else’s.  My other guess is that someone once told him a story where a servant murdered his master.  Even though that I usually don’t read horror stories, because the plot is well chosen and the title good, I would like to read more of his writing pieces.  I think that the one comment that I would like to make about Edgar Allan Poe’s stories is that they all have the same theme -horror stories.  I just wish that he had written other kinds of stories too.  Also, I think that it is interesting that the story of his death isn’t average.  For one thing, no one knows why he died.  Also after he died, he was placed at first under a grave with no markings, but later it was given a headstone.

Edgar Allan Poe Essay

Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were named David and Elizabeth Poe. When Edgar was two, Elizabeth separated from her husband and she took her three sons with her. In 1811, she died. Edgar Allan Poe was then adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan, while her other sons went somewhere else. Mrs. and Mrs John Allan were wealthy merchants so Edgar went to good schools. At the age of 17, he went to the University of Virginia. Even though Mrs. and Mr. John Allan had plenty of money, they gave Edgar only one third of it. The next year, Edgar quit school because he didn’t have enough money. He joined the army because he had no money and no skill for jobs. He did very well and became a Sergeant major. In 1829, Mrs. Allan died and Mr. Allan tried to be friendlier to Edgar and signed his application to West Point. He didn’t stay long in the army because John Allan refused to give him any money. At first, Edgar was struggling to be a writer. Then, he won the job for the news paper. As many years passed, Edgar became one of the first well-known Americans to earn a living as a writer. Some of the things he wrote about were romance, horror and comedy; he also created science fiction. On October 7th, 1849, at the age of 40, Edgar Allan Poe died in Baltimore from a drinking problem, people say. He is still popular around the world and some of his famous pieces today are “The Raven,” “The Tell-tale Heart” and more.

Edgar Allan Poe is known as the father of horror stories. He became one of the most popular poetry writers. His stories weren’t similar to other writers. His stories are usually in first person narration. The narrators usually confess they killed someone, but they say they are not crazy. Poe’s stories are usually dark. In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” there was a crazy man who killed his master because he hated his eye. He thought that if he killed his master and his eye, he would accomplish his mission. The section where he kills the old man is very descriptive and good: “The old man was dead. I removed the bed and examined the corpse. Yes, he was stone, stone dead. I placed my hand upon the heart and held it there many minutes. There was no pulsation. He was stone dead. His eye would trouble me no more”. Then the police came and the narrator was confident that the police would not find out what happened. As the police stay longer, the narrator becomes more anxious they will find out. Then he becomes really nervous and he confesses that he killed the man.” There entered three men, who introduced themselves, with perfect suavity, as officers of the police. A shriek had been heard by a neighbor during the night; suspicion of foul play had been aroused; information had been lodged at the police office, and they (the officers) had been deputed to search the premises. I smiled, –for what had I to fear? I bade the gentlemen welcome. The shriek, I said, was my own in a dream. The old man, I mentioned, was absent in the country. I took my visitors all over the house. I bade them search –search well. I led them, at length, to his chamber. I showed them his treasures, secure, undisturbed. In the enthusiasm of my confidence, I brought chairs into the room, and desired them here to rest from their fatigues, while I myself, in the wild audacity of my perfect triumph, placed my own seat upon the very spot beneath which reposed the corpse of the victim”. He repeats himself a lot to make it interesting. He does a great job of making his narrators confident to a crazy degree. His use of words is incredible. Some of the things he says are hard to believe, but his words make them believable.

Edgar Allan Poe’s stories remind of Harry Potter because even though I know what happens, I still feel nervous. His stories are really suspenseful. That’s why Edgar Allan Poe is a good writer.Edgar Allan Poe’s work is so interesting that I feel I am watching a movie. The part that is really interesting is his titles. In my opinion, I think the title makes sense because the narrator hears the old man’s heart when he’s dead. Edgar Allan Poe was a successful writer because his works are really dark and different from other writers. For example, in “The Tell Tale Heart”, the narrator stands next to the door and peeks in to see if the man is sleeping for an hour. Imagine you were doing that, doing nothing expect for peeking your head through the door for a full hour. That’s why Edgar Allan Poe was a good writer and was successful. If Edgar Allan Poe was successful, how did he get his ideas? I think he got some of his ideas from depression. His stories are usually dark, cold and scary because of his child hood. He also probably got some of his ideas from other writers. All of the stories I read were dark; I would like to read one that wasn’t dark. I want to see the difference in language between the two kinds of stories. Even though he had a sad childhood, he became an incredible writer.

Edgar Allan Poe Activity

Poe was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts and he died on October 7th 1849, in a Baltimore hospital. Poe lived for a long and stressful life for forty years having problems and accomplishing different things. Poe’s parents were named David and Elizabeth. He had two siblings, Henry and Rosalie, but unfortunately they had to be separated when Edgar was two. Poe’s parents split up and shortly after that Poe’s mother died. Poe was sent to live with Mrs. and Mr. John Allan, a well off high classed family. Poe went to good schools. He learned Latin and French, math and history in school. He  was a very bright student. When he was about 17 he went to the University of Virginia and did well there. However all his life he had drinking problems and was expelled from school a year early. After this he went to join the US army and did well. Then he wanted to go to West Point and he got in but only stayed there for a short amount of time. After his army experience he went to New York City to start writing poems and stories. He married cousin, Virginia who was many years younger than him. He had a rough start with his writing. Journals, story writers and poem editors soon found out about him and he was writing articles and journal entries and poems for newspapers and other publications. He loved writing poems so he became a poetry writer and he wrote fantastic poems. Most of them were very dark. Here a some great ones: The Raven, The Tale Tell Heart, The Haunted Palace and he wrote lots more!  His wife Virginia died and he was very depressed. At the end of his life he traveled a lot and visited friends and then he passed away. Poe’s death was mysterious and no one knows how or why he died. One of the big questions in his life was how he was a great writer in Horror stories!

Poe is one of the most popular horror story writers in America. This is because he writes his poems and stories with great vocabulary and grammar and content. His stories are so good because they give you a picture and keep you intrigued. Most of his poems/stories are morbid and I think that may be because he lived a very sad life and when he writes he expresses his feelings. One of my favorite poems is by Poe and it’s called The Tale Tell Heart written in a first person narrative. This poem is about a man who hates an old man’s eye and thinks it’s evil. The man who hates the evil eye is crazy and wants to kill the old man so he never has to look at that evil eye again. Throughout the story he waits until the right moment and kills the old man. Poe’s stories are very simple but the language is expressive. Poe’s writing in this story makes me feel a little disturbed and a little sad but at the same time very interested. Some of my favorite parts in the story show that he is a great writer.

Here is an example of a simple paragraph that gives the reader a good idea of what the story is about. From this paragraph the reader can understand that the narrator is crazy.
– from http://poestories.com

“It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture –a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees — very gradually –I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.”

This paragraph describes the narrator’s final night and the intensity of waiting for the right time to kill the old man.

“Upon the eight night I was more than usually cautious in opening the door.  A watche’s minute hand more quickly than did mine. Never before that night had I felt the extent of my own powers-of may sagacity.  I could scarcely contain my feelings of triumph. To think that there I was, opening the door, little by little, and he not to even dream of my secret deeds or thoughts.  I fairly chuckled at the idea; and perhaps he heard me; for he moved on the bed suddenly, as if startled.  Now you may think that I drew back–but no.  His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the shutters were close fastened, for fear of robbers,) and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing on it steadily, steadily.”

I think Poe is great at writing horror poems/stories. I’ve read many of his stories and my favorite one is The Tell Tale Heart. The background of Poe’s life is chaotic and it’s astonishing to read well written stories by him because he had a difficult life. I don’t think Poe is someone to look up to as a person but as a writer I think he is very talented. I like his writing because it is gloomy.

The title of The Tell Tale Heart is appropriate because at the end of the story you understand what the title means. I get from the title a feeling of karma because a heart can tell on you in many different ways. In this story, the heart tells on the killer.  At the end of the story the killer becomes worried that the cops will find out about the dead old man and he starts thinking that the dead man’s heart is alive. The killer becomes psychotic  because he hears the heart beating and his guilt forces him to show the cops the dead man.

I think Poe gets his plots and characters from his life. This is because all of his stories are sad and his life was sad, dealing with family issues, his alcoholism, and his difficulty keeping a job. He was orphaned and then adopted so maybe in some of his stories he uses his past. Poe was a successful writer and this is because his writing is very detailed and suspenseful. Since it is written for adults the grammar can seem complicated at times for a young reader. Once the young reader understands the story he/she will realize how good Poe’s writing is. Because he writes in an old fashioned way it can be difficult to understand the story. That’s part of the fun for me to figure out what it really means. I also think he was successful because most of his stories were horror and he was especially good at that.  Poe is a great writer and I would like to read more of his stories to learn his writing style and just for fun!

I think Poe will be remembered  for a long time! Unfortunately he had a tragic life and died at an early age but he was a gift from God! He will always be someone to look up to as a horror story writer!

Edgar Allan Poe By Stella

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 13, 1809. When he was young his mother died and his father left him. He made very little money writing. When Edgar Allan Poe was 26 he married his 13-year old cousin, Virginia. When they got married they lied and said that she was 21. He spent the last years of his life living in a cottage in the Bronx, NY. Edgar Allan Poe  was found on the street delirious and was brought to a hospital and died a few days later on October 8, 1849. Edgar Allan Poe wrote some really amazing poems and stories such as The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven.

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the first people to publish a horror story. He is known as the “father of horror stories”. In The Tell Tale Heart he uses language that is  creepy and eerily descriptive. I think that this is why he is such a good horror writer. For example, these sentences made me notice how skilled of a writer Edgar Allan Poe was:“The old man’s hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once –once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him.” I think these sentences are really great because it makes you interested in what comes next. When I first read these sentences I was surprised how intriguing he made the murder. Usually when a murder scene is in a story it is  gory and horrifying but,  in this example, Edgar Allan Poe is able to show horror in a more subtle way.

I think that The Tell Tale Heart is a really great title for the story. I think this because the main character ends up feeling guilty about killing the old man. As a result of the guilt he thinks that he can hear the old man’s heart beating, then he confesses to killing him. So the name The Tell Tale Heart is perfect in my opinion because of the imaginary of the beating of the old man’s heart made the murderer “ tell the tale” of killing the old man.

Edgar Allan Poe seemed to be a pretty unhappy person. I think that some of his unhappiness resulted in his amazing poems and short stories.  I’ve noticed that  most of his writing has a depressed and sad vibe to it. I think that using his sadness and maybe some anger to write amazing poems and stories was a good way to use his emotions to motivate himself.

I would really like to read more of Edgar Allan Poe’s work. I think that it is incredible that so many years after his death his writing is still read and loved by so many people.

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston MA. His mother died when he was only two years of age, and Edgar went to live with an adoptive family, the Allans’. Edgar didn’t have enough money to pay for college so he had to leave. Edgar started becoming shunned by his father and had to look for a job. He had no skills, and no money. When he was about eighteen he joined the U.S. army in Boston. Edgar’s adoptive mother soon died. Edgar’s adoptive father tried to become friendly towards Edgar. He also had to sign an application for West point, but then he didn’t come up with enough money.  Edgar didn’t have many friends to help him so he tried to make a living as a writer. He soon became a newspaper editor and started to submit poems and stories. Some examples of his work are “The Raven” or “The Tell-Tale Heart”. In his personal life he married his thirteen year old cousin and they moved to Virginia. After his wife died his health declined and all this time he was a heavy drinker. Found in Baltimore after taking the wrong train and not being able to tell what had happened to him, he was taken to the hospital and died at the age of 40. He died on October, 7,1848.

Edgar Allan Poe was a great horror story writer because in the poem “The Tell-Tale Heart” he uses a lot of description. For example this part of a paragraph talks about the reason the narrator does not like the old man’s eye – “I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture –a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees — very gradually –I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever”. An example  of good vocabulary is placed in this sentence – “Above all was the sense of hearing acute.” Acute is the descriptive word in the sentence. He also uses words that we would not technically use today in are own writing; words like Hearken for example  He also has a way of making his poems scary. For example, in “The Tell-Tale Heart” he focuses on how he wants to kill the old man. Murder and a sense of evil is what makes his poems scary, but what makes Edgar Allan Poe a successful writer and where does he get his inspiration for his characters?

I think “The Tell-Tale Heart was will chosen for the poem because it’s about a servant and an old man and how the old man has a evil eye that the creeps the servant out. The servant doesn’t like the eye so he plans to kill the man. At the end when the old man is dead and the police arrive the servant is confident that the police will find no trace of murder because he hit the old man from sight, but all of a sudden he hears the beating of the old mans heart. Now this drives him insane and he finally confesses to the murder. One of the things that makes Edgar Allan Poe a successful writer is this – He is very descriptive and uses words that are in someways very violent like murder and kill and these words make the poem all the more horrific. In a lot of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems and stories their are usually a lot of interesting characters. I think he gets his inspiration for these characters is from his childhood of family or maybe he just made them up. He also comes up with a lot of interesting plots like in “The Tell-Tale Heart” he talks about how he wants to kill and old man because he doesn’t like his eye. Just by observation I notice that a lot of his work includes a death of an evil thing that haunts him. Personally no ,but if someone got me to read a poem that I really like while scanning through it it might make me want to read it a little.

Edgar became a drinker and quickly he had to quit school to pay his debt in less than a year. Edgar had no money and no skills, so he went to Boston and joined the U.S. Army in 1827,when he was 18. He got the rank of sergeant major. In 1829, Mrs. Allan died and John Allan tried to be friendly towards Edgar and signed Edgar’s application to West Point. In 1831, Edgar Allan Poe went to New York City where he had some of his poetry published. He submitted stories to a number of magazines and they were all rejected. Poe had no friends, no job, and he had trouble with his money. He sent a letter to John Allan begging for help but John rejected him and help didn’t  come to him. John Allan died in 1834 and did not mention Edgar in his will.  In 1835, Edgar finally got a job as an editor of a newspaper. He died in the hospital on Sunday, October 7, 1849.
Edgar Allan Poe was known for his horror stories. He was said to be the father, of horror stories .He wrote about “murder revenge, torture, the plague, being buried alive, and insanity”.One of his great stories was The Tell Tale Heart. One of Edgar’s great talents is making things sound scary. Sometimes he repeats the words kind of slowly, or he mixes the words in a way that it just makes it sound creepy. He is also great with details. In one paragraph from The Tell Tale Heart you can see what a great writer he was and that he must have put so much time into this story. He also repeats

I think Edgar Allan Poe is a great writer because of his technique for making the stories he writes scary and interesting. I think that Edgar could have gotten his characters from either his childhood or adult hood. In some cases he could be describing somebody that he knew and then changed stuff about them except for what they looked like so he could describe them.  I liked reading his work but I do not think I would read them for fun.

Thanksgiving break is over and we are back at school and ready to learn! We have neared the end of our Greek Gods and Goddesses project and they are proudly standing on Mt. Olympus (a.k.a. our classroom wall). Our next project is about ancient Crete and we the students will be the teachers. More information to follow. In class, we paired up with partners and talked about three special memories. We brought in three items that represent the memories that we had chosen. We had to tell the stories and narrow it down to one that we would write about.

Edgar Allan Poe Essay by Matt

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an American poet, short story writer, editor, and literary critic. He was the son of Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. After his mom died his father left him. He was adopted by John Allan in 1811 in Richmond, Virginia. He got his middle name Allan from his adopted father. In 1815-1820 he went to school in Scotland and England. In 1826 he attended the University of Virginia for 11 months. Then his guardian stopped giving Edgar money stay in school there and in 1827 he went back to Richmond. When he returned he found his high school sweetheart (Sarah) Elmira Royster, engaged. Instead of focusing on her he married his cousin Virginia Clemm. Two years before the Raven was published, she died. Then in 1845 “The Raven” was published and soon after that in 1849, Poe died of an unknown cause. A year after Poe’s death his poem “The Tell Tale Heart” was published.

I think Poe wrote great horror stories because of the descriptive language he used. An example of his language is “The old man’s hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once –once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done”. These sentences creep me out a lot the language gives a me a very clear picture in my mind. A creepy picture that makes me almost jump out of my seat. I think this proves that in fact Edgar Allan Poe was “The Father of Horror”

I think Poe’s story the “The Tell Tale Heart” has the perfect title because he gives away everything that happens in the story to the cops because of the heart beat. The heart beat gives us clues about what is going to happen in the story. So theoretically the heart tells the story. I think that Poe’s descriptive language in his works makes him a successful writer. Maybe people and events in his personal life gave him ideas for his story, because that’s where I get a lot of ideas for my writing. From what I read of Poe’s work, I would like to read his other famous pieces, like “The Raven” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” All in all, I think Edgar Allan Poe was a great writer and I wish he were still alive writing great pieces of work.

EDGAR ALLAN POE

Edgar Allen Poe by Ben

Edgar Allan Poe

On January 19, 1806 in Boston, Massachusetts one of the most famous poets was born and his name was Edgar Allan Poe. He had a brother and sister and unfortunately his Mother died when he was very young, and his father abandoned him shortly after. He was then taken in by a wealthy merchant and his wife. When he was ready for college Poe went to the University of Virginia, but he had to leave after the first semester because he didn’t have enough money. Then Poe decided he wanted to join the army and lied about his age to do so. He trained to be an officer, but failed the test. After he left the army he decided to leave his foster parents to pursue his writing career. Soon after that he married his 13 year old cousin Virginia Clemm. He started creating very popular poems and stories. He became very popular for creating Sci-Fi and horror stories. One of his greatest poems was “The Raven”. It was published in January 1845. He had many other stories to, like “The Tell Tale Heart” and “Alone”. Two Years after The Raven was published Poe’s wife died. This led Poe into a spiral of depression. Poe started to drink. He died on October 7th 1849 of unknown causes. He was found unconscious on the streets and that led to his death. Many believe he was killed or he died because of his alcohol problems. Poe still keeps inspiring other horror writers with his collection of work.

Poe was known as “The Father of Horror.” He was the first man to write horror stories and have the stories become popular. His stories made the whole world shriek in terror and let me tell you why. Poe used such dark and creative ideas for his poems, like in “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Raven.” In both of these poems the settings were very dark and eerie like in “The Tell Tale Heart” when the crazy man in the story killed the old man. I’ll give you a sample of the scene, “The old man’s hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once –once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him.” That one scene gave me a great picture of what was happening in the old man’s room and how the crazy man killed him with the bed. Let’s break up that scene in parts. Number 1 the setting: The scene took place in a very dark and scary room. Great. Number 2 the sound: The sound was amazing. I felt like I could hear the crazy man screaming and the old man’s heart slowly beating. Great. Number 3 the action: The action was one of the best parts. His language describing the action made me feel like I was in the room watching the crazy man dragging and killing the old man. Great. Poe was a master of horror. He could build up the anticipation till the last moment and that is an important element in a good horror story. Poe could also make you feel that you were in the minds of the victims and killers. His work inspired many writers of horror and mystery over the ages and continues to do so.

Many men and women love Edgar’s stories and Poems. Let me tell you why I love them. First, the titles are great. You may think the titles are just words but Poe’s titles make you wonder what’s going to happen in the story. They make you want to read the poem without giving too to much information away. The title is only the bun and the story is the real meat. As you know his stories are mostly horror. They are very scary. I think there some of the scariest stories ever. Poe reminds me of more modern writers like Stephen King and Alford Hitchcock. Edgar’s stories aren’t so much jump out of your seat stories but more mysterious and suspenseful. That is what I like. I love his characters and plots. They seem so real maybe some of his characters could relate to his real sad life. Just a hunch. I think Poe is one of the best horror story writers and always will be.
