Twitter post – Ava

I think that twitter is a very good tool when it’s used in moderation.  When we have a “twitter smack-down” it gives kids a chance to look into what is happening in other parts of the world.  It’s also a good way to communicate with other schools and learn about how your school is different from other schools. I also think that twitter can be a dangerous tool.  People can put stuff on there that might be inappropriate for certain age levels, and some tweets can lure people into giving other people private information about themselves. It’s okay as long as twitter is used carefully and for the right reasons.  One of my favorite things on twitter is the pictures that professional photographers put up.  I love looking at the pictures of volcanoes and oceans and animals.  I think twitter is a great tool, but it should definitely be supervised by responsible adults.

Book talk: The Hobbit – Ava

People ask, ‘Are dragons real? or ‘I wonder if goblins exist’ but no one seems to mention the hobbits who live in large, clean holes in hills.  Bilbo Baggins, a well respected hobbit meets up with an old wizard, Gandalf, who has a request for him in The Hobbit by JR Tolkein.  He has asked him to come on an adventure! What? A hobbit going on an adventure, with fighting and other magical creatures in the world along with him? No way! Bilbo can’t even believe it when fourteen dwarves arrive at his house asking for food, drink, and a burglar to accompany them on a quest to the misty mountains to destroy the dragon Smaug, who has taken the mountain from the dwarves.  Bilbo takes much convincing for this, but eventually agrees.  His long journey is filled with hardship, work, and a new mind for the world outside his home in bag end. But mysterious and unexplained things happen on this quest, and make sure to read what happens to the group of travelers as they approach the misty mountains.

World War One Poem – Ava

World war one was a bloody scene
It brought sadness over waste lands in which bombs rained continuously
Life of humans was disappearing fast, as one after the other fell
Exhaustion was brought over soldiers, begging them to retire to their homes, but they could not give up
Line after line of men marched through countless ditches lined with the blood of their comrades and enemies
Lights streaked across the horizon as explosions echoed in the air
Was this what had to happen to bring a peace that lasted only twenty years?

My middle school dream – Ava

My dream for the PDS middle school is to have more free write time. I think that if we had writing time, all three of the grades could connect more with each other, and people could brainstorm with other people or work on stories together.  It would be a nice way to get to know other people, older and younger than yourself. Writing is one of my favorite things to do, and I know a lot of other people like it too.My dream for all students around the world, including myself, is to think about how learning new things can be really fun, like doing more hands-on projects.  A lot of kids do enjoy learning, but a lot of the kids I know don’t like it. If everyone enjoyed learning more, then some people might be a lot smarter.

Bengal Tigers – Ava

Bengal Tigers
By Ava

Have you ever wanted to do something for an endangered animal? I know I have, and now I know that one of the best ways to help is to raise awareness.  One of the things that I want to help with is saving Bengal Tigers (they’re also called Indian Tigers because the live in India).  I love Bengal Tigers so much, and I feel like they have to be saved with help from us, because we take a lot of part killing them. Right now, there are less than 2,500 tigers left in the wild.  There used to be eight subspecies of tigers, but three of the subspecies were killed off in the 20th century, and the remaining five are extremely endangered.

I’m going to tell you a bit about Bengal Tigers.  Well, Bengal Tigers are known for their strength and power, and they are the largest cats in the feline family.  They like to eat  buffalo, deer, wild pigs, and other large mammals and a lot of the time, they will hunt for miles at night to find what they want.  And, believe it or not, a hungry Bengal Tiger can eat more than 60 pounds in one night, but they usually eat less (Well, they are nocturnal hunters! I would be hungry if I hadn’t eaten all day).  Females give birth to 2-6 cubs a litter and most of the time, the cubs can’t hunt until they are 18 months old.

Overall,  I think that if you have something that you really care about and want to help, you should take into account what you can do. Even us kids can change the world if we just set our mind to it!

By the way, I got some of my facts from nationalgeographic.com

My Passion by Ava

I have many passions, but my favorite one of all is working with animals. I love it in every way, whether it’s volunteering at a local cat shelter, pet sitting my friends guinea pig, or just refilling my dogs food and water bowls. I love all animals and I help them as much as I can.I used to work at a non-kill cat shelter. My average amount of working there was three to four hours a day. The cat shelter, Mid Hudson Animal Aid, had a program called Feral Friends, where you are assigned a cat to socialize so that it has more chance of being adopted. When I started with that program, my cat, Wonder, ran away from me. It took awhile, but eventually with lots of training, she began to rub up against peoples legs, sit on them and purr. Finally, she was adopted. I did many other jobs at the cat shelter too. I also have the job of taking care of some peoples pets while their away.I have always lived with three cats and recently one dog. I have not worked at the cat shelter for a while now, but I might go to restart volunteering there again. I really hope that I can continue helping all animals, from an one hundred foot long whale, to an albino mouse.

Beowulf from Grendel’s point of view – Ava

Grendel grunted loudly, forcing all the other creatures that may have lived within a miles radius of himself to scatter.  The monster  loved to do that. It was just so amusing to watch them flee from the waters’ depths in which he lived.  All of a sudden, the little light that shone on the lake vanished.  Grendel looked up, only to notice the familiar shape of a war boat where heroes came from.  Quickly and silently, he raced up to the surface, his large legs propelling him out of the murky water until he was upon the shore line.  He kept only his eyes above the surface, not daring to eat anyone just yet.  As he watched, he noticed one huge warrior stepping off the boat with his comrades swarming about him.  He captured two words: “Beowulf” and “Hrothgar”.  One of them he was familiar with.  Hrothgar was the king of the Danes, who lived nearest to Grendel and his mother.  The mead hall in which Grendel liked to feast on people was the one that Hrothgar owned.  “But ho, ho!” he smelt himself on his thigh, thinking about all the delicious heros that had been sucked down his gullet.
“No people are any match for me!  No, I am the strongest living being in the world!” He said this under the water so the people above could not hear him.  Then huge bubbles started spilling out around his face.  The water turned hot with anger as he heard his mother shout back up to him:
“Who dares deny me to be the strongest and most fearsome creature in the world?”
“I didn’t mean it mother, sorry!” He screamed back.  “Well, I will go and feast tonight.” Grendel cackled with glee at the thought of more food.

As Grendel stood in front of the door to Hrothgar’s mead hall, he thought about his dinner. Luscious, raw meat, and sticky, warm blood.  Not delaying himself any longer, he burst through the door that barred his entrance. The hinges cracked away from the stone wall, and the door fell with a large crash on the hall’s floor. Grunting and snarling, he plucked up his first victim and ripped him apart before eating him.  Then something happened that had never happened before.  Grendel’s arm was seized, and the strength in the pull brought him crashing to the floor, crushing three men while doing it.  But the pressure on his arm kept building up, and no matter how much he pushed and struggled, clawed and bit, he could not get  hold of his attacker.  This went on for a long time, the two beings locked in combat.  Then Grendel’s enemy gave one last heave, and Grendel felt his arm leave his socket.  Howling in agony, Grendel lurched up and stumbled out of that wretched place.  King Hrothgar could keep his heroes and knights and mead hall.  Finally, he reached the water and lay down in its current.  He let it take him down, down, down to the bottom.  Then his whole world went black.

“The Power of We” by Ava

Blog Action Day

The things that people can do together are amazing.
The things we’ve done help the world in different ways.
We humans are good, as long as we can find what they want to have inside us.
We have love for the world, we just need to show it in our own ways.
The things that we do can be terrible or they can be great.
Almost everything that we do to help the world includes others.
We kids can do a page of math together, helping each other with division                                                                         Or we could have a bake sale to raise money for our favorite organization.
A mother and child could bake cookies together.
A group of people can stand up for what they believe in.
We can change the world.
We can help.
We can have fun.
We are humans who can love, care, and be great!
