S.L.C. By Blade

Recently, we had something called the S.L.C. which is Student Led Conference. This  is a time to lead a conference and talk about how we feel about our classes and school. We told our parents about our strengths, weaknesses, and goals. It was just about a half-hour long. In the beginning, I was so nervous but at the end, I said it was the easiest thing ever.

Preparing for it was so hard. Most every day we had to rush to finish printing, finding, and preparing. We had to highlight most of the important parts, and look over our report cards to find things to match what we thought we needed. We spent about a month doing this for an hour a day (about) and put everything in a folder. When the Student Led Conference came, I used a computer to show and explain all about myself.

I think that the Student lead Conferences were very useful. Even though I did not go to my Parent Led Conference, I still learned a lot about myself. First of all, the biggest thing that I learned was that in school, I really do try my hardest. Whether I am doing the worst in my class or the best, I will always be trying my hardest!!! 🙂

Nature’s Classroom By Blade

Last week, our whole middle school in PDS went on a field trip at a place called Nature’s Classroom. We did a lot of fun activities. The counselors were all very funny! They had weird nick-names, too. Their names were, Rustash, Johny Roby Benny, Home slice, Sloth Lord, Libby, Martin, and Mer. It was really fun and we slept over. We learned a lot about Marine Biology and how to survive in the wild.

One thing that we did there was to learn about something called called the “Underground Railroad”. We did a huge realistic reenactment of it! The counselors who were at the camp, were playing the masters of the slaves and the people who were buying the slaves. The students of PDS (which is us), played the slaves in the reenactment! We all split into groups to make it a lot easier. It was so realistic that they even screamed at us to really make us feel like we were their property. They told us that they would not touch us or hit us, but some of us got really scared. They said that if we didn’t cooperate, then they  would take out a special whip. It had nine ropes on it with big hooks on the end. Not just that, but the hooks are soaked in a lot of salt water! We also got bought to each other and sold to each other. We escaped from that placed (this is still not real) and pretended to travel for years and years to get to Canada! When finally “got to Canada”, we were free slaves.

After that, we went inside to talk about what we did. We all gathered around at about 9:00 at night. The people who we split up into groups with all talked. They told that most all of the things that happened out the was real. One part that wasn’t real is that not so many slaves would have tried to escaped. They told us how hundreds out of thousands of slaves try to escaped. We learned about drivers. They are like the slaves that take care, and control the other, worse slaves. If the driver does a good job, they get more food and a better bed. Sometimes if they were really, really good, they would get there own house! Out of those hundred only less then two percent survived or made it to there destination. One really fun part is that we learned a lot. Another part that was fun is that we did the “Underground Railroad” ,the whole thing, in the dark at night time (about 8:45, it was an hour long).

Because of all of the excitement that was happening, my bunk was really, really, really tired that whole week. We ended up going to bed around 5:00 in the morning!!!!

Imagination Day By Blade

At school we had something called Imagination Day. It was where we got to teach our own things to different students in school. It was so awesome! I had so much fun. I decided that I didn’t want to teach anything. I did learn though. For my first activity, I did soccer skills. The teachers were my friends Kristi and Alex. I learned a lot. We did goal kicks, a mini soccer game, passes, and much more! We named our team Confidence because we practiced self motivation and self Confidence. My next activity was The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. The teacher was my friend Milo. We chose a Roman Emperor to write about. I chose the terrible Emperor Caligula. I made a poster of him too. It had a mugshot of him and a wanted sign. It was so cool. I’m really looking forward to doing this again next D day!

Marco Polo by Blade

Dear Dennis,

I thought that your presentation was really cool at Vassar College. I was one of the kids in the audience (I was the kid who was asking a lot of questions). I sat three seats from the left in the second row. I saw your video that you presented before. I learned so much about Marco Polo! That must have SO hard doing that. I will keep your secret about your illegal passport situation (hehe). I think that what you and your friend did was so amazing! We got your book and it is so cool. I love all of your pictures. The camel “thing” was really funny. Thanks again for all of your time. It was really worth it!

SOME STUDENT STUFF BY BLADE

Some traits for a great student would be to have great attention. If the student is looking for neon green and purple flying pigs outside then they will fall behind. Also, a great student should have a very positive attitude! Even if the class that the student is in is boring, the student should still make the best of it. Also, a great student should save the talking in the middle of the class until the end of the class or the end of school!

CC by Blade

Alert! Alert! Always obey the rules of copyrighting! You can never…ever use someones picture without there permission! And when needing a picture on the Internet, have to go on a website that has pictures that have CC next to it somewhere. CC means CREATIVE COMMONS. Always look for this on the website! You can get a fine for not doing this so always follow the COPYRIGHT RULES!!!!!!!!!!

CC is very helpful in some situations. If you don’t want to have to go through all of the copyright laws, then take a picture that has CC on it. That’s the reason why you need to use pictures with CC. If you don’t, that means that you are using someone else’s pictures without giving them credit!! That is very bad and you WILL get fined by the GOVERNMENT!!!!

challenge # 10 by:Blade Kalb

The edublogs challenge was so much fun! I got 11 comments on all of my posts together. Three of them are not school based! The other eight were based on school (or school related.) I got 7 comments from my classmates. I got 1 comment from an overseas student. I got 1 comment from my dad. I also got 1 from a kid in my school that is in high school. Last but not least I got a comment from Sue Waters!!!!

I got the most comments on my Summer Fun post! I am not so sure why because even though I worked hard on it, I did not find it that interesting! I definitely found my scary story writing very fun! I liked writing that because it was a big challenge for me. We did not change our themes. It would have messed up our blog. We have 11 widgets on our blog! I think that it is a perfect number (although I don’t know a a lot about that)! I LOVE BLOGGING!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a link to challenge # 10!

Edgar Allen Poe essay By: Blade Kalb

Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston. He died on October 7, in 1849 in a hospital. As a child he was very poor.Edgar Allan Poe had a brother and a sister. His brother’s name was Henry. His sister’s name was Rosalie. Edgar Allan Poe’s mom (Elizabeth) died when he was 3 years old! She died in 1811. It was not a happy life for them! In127, Edgar Allan Poe joined the army because he had very little money and quit school a year early! He was 18 years old when this happened. Later on, in 1834, he went to New York to make some poetry. He needed money. He got some of the poems published, and earned some money. Some of the poems that he wrote were The Raven, Annabell Lee, and The Gold Bug!!!!!!! He was an amazing writer that everyone adores them to this day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edgar Allan Poe was also called the father of horror stories. For example I will take this sentence… “TRUE! — nervous — very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses — not destroyed — not dulled them.” He was a strange kind of writer. He used the most weird things to say and made them into a story. Even though his story’s were very strange, they were just amazing! In a lot of his story’s he would include “madness”. “Why would you say that I am mad”. He was a very CONVENIENT person too!

I don’t think that THE TELL TALE HEART is a very good title. A lot of the things that Edger Allen Poe wrote didn’t make so much sense because that is not how we talk today. So maybe that would have been a good title in the early 1800’s, but now it is not as good as it could have been! He was a successful writer because he was the first person to ever write scary stories. I don’t really have an idea for where he got his characters. If I had to take a guess though, I think he might have gotten them from people he knew! I would like to read more stories about him. I would because he was just such a strange, strange person and writer! I would also like to say that I feel sorry for him because nobody noticed him while he was alive. Now that he is dead, people will remember him forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Win! Win! Win!by Blade

Win! Win! Win!

I love blogging at Poughkeepsie Day School! I think it is so fun! I hadn’t even heard of blogging before I started to blog this year. I think that it is a great opportunity for us (my class)to interact with other classes ACROSS THE WORLD and learn about them! Our class already has about twenty different flags (we use a flag counter) from around the world! We are blogging with students from Sabanci University in Turkey and that is amazing! I am looking forward to blogging with more and more classes around the world! Check out our Hudson Valley Vokis!

My post is part of the The Edublogger’s Share Your Blogging Experience . It is the choice topic (number 5.)
