Observation Piece By Cole

Ice Versus Fire

I reach up to my shelf and grab a piece of orbit spearmint gum.  After I quickly shove it into my mouth, I put on my suit. Then I become SUPER FLAME!

I dart outside my house to see the notorious Dr. Ice. He jumps at me. Instantly a wave of cold crosses my entire body, especially affecting my fingers. Quickly, I jump back and I almost get hit by a speeding car. I leap back at him and I smell my gum very distinctly. *FLASH* As I leap backwards, and land on my porch I notice a piece of furniture. I light it on fire and throw it at Dr. Ice. Then I am startled by the loud sound of a plane overhead, and Dr. Ice leaps at me and his amazing strength helps him as he throws me into the air, putting me feet away from the engine of the plane. Scared, I crash back down to earth with a large thud. I see an unnatural swarm of bugs around me and I flick them all away. Another bug flies into my face and I swat it away and lose my balance. I crash into my hot tub which immediately comes to a boil. If I don’t get out of the water FAST I will die!

I jump out of the water and hurl a log at Dr Ice. He falls down and throws it back at me. Along with the log he grabs a laptop from a terrified passerby and throws it at me. The log zooms by me blowing my hair aside with a cold breeze. I then get hit by the laptop flat in my thighs. Dr Ice’s cold is starting to crack the ground beneath me, so I jump over to a different place. I look at my blank fingers completely frostbitten. My nose is runny and my mouth is cold all because of Dr Ice. He pulls all of the water out of my well and throws it at me freezing it in the air. I dodge it and run at Dr Ice. I tackle him into my hot tub and I watch as he slowly melts away in the boiling water….

Global Read Aloud By Cole

    GRAOOMM

The Global Read Aloud is an organization of people and schools from around the world. PDS has taken part in a few times and we have read different books. Different books are read aloud for each age group. This year we are reading the book Out Of My Mind by Sharon Draper. I have already read this book in the past but I still like it.

In the book Out of My Mind, there is a girl named Melody with cerebral palsy and she tries to do things that normal kids can do that but she can’t do. This includes talking, learning and even taking part in difficult competitions. Melody has lots of trouble in the book and right now she has recently gotten a computer called the MediTalker which allows her to talk.

A couple of characters from the book are: Melody the main character who has cerebral palsy. Mom: Melody’s mother and supporter. Dad: Melody’s Dad and other supporter. Mrs V: The woman who teaches Melody how to roll (do physical movements) and point and deal with the things that are wrong with her. Penny: Melody’s little sister. Catherine: Melody’s aid and someone who is very nice to her. Rose: Melody’s best friend in school. Molly and Claire: two kids that bully Melody in school.

The books is very well written and it’s funny at times as well as the overall sad aspect of the book. Some of the things Melody has the are sort of like “Side effects” to cerebral palsy are: Seeing colors when she listens to different music. Smelling smells when she listens to music, and stuff like that. I am really enjoying the book for the second time and I am excited to reach different parts of the book. You should definitely read Out of My Mind and you should also join the Global Read Aloud project.

Challenge 5 Where is the Water? – Cole

Challenge 5- Where is the water?-Cole

In the entire world 11% of humans do not have enough clean drinking water and therefore will have a high chance of early death. We don’t want that, which is why we need to change that.  As you probably know in places like Africa and Asia people are lacking their water supply. (If you would like to learn more about this go to the link in this paragraph.) To fix this we need to do simple things like donating water. There is a project called The Water Project which is helping people get good drinking water. This is the kind of thing that we have to do to make the world a better place. Here are some facts that might make you think about this topic more.

  • one in five deaths of children under 5 are due to water borne diseases.

  • 1 in 8 people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water.

  • 37% of people with no good water sources are from Sub-Saharan Africa

  • Girls under the age of 15 are twice as likely as boys to be the family member responsible for fetching water.

  • Half of the world’s hospital beds are filled with people dying of a water related disease

If we can fix this the world will be a much better place and most of the people in Africa will be so happy that you did this for them. I hope we can fix this horrible problem.

Government Shutdown – Cole

Challenge #4 -Activity-3 Cole talks to Obama about the government shutdown

C: Hi Mr President. Thank you for your time.

O:Not a problem.

C: I’d like to talk a little about the government shutdown. What is it and why did it happen?

O:Well Cole, the government shutdown happened because I passed ObamaCare and it was a good law when it started but the house of representatives refused to fund it.

C: Who is getting paid?

O: Well people in the house of representatives have mostly decided to donate their money but two people are keeping their pay and another two are undecided on what to do with their pay.

C: How does this affect people with small businesses

O:  Most people with small businesses are not affected yet but people with large businesses are not being payed because they are so involved with the government.

C: How can we stop this

O:  Well in my opinion we really need a compromise between me and the house of representatives but for now nobody is budging so we will have to maintain ourselves during the shutdown.

C: Thanks for your time

O:Don’t mention it

Who do you think is going to create the compromise comment below. 🙂

A day in the life -Cole

Challenge #3

Normally, I get up for school around seven o’clock but at times I get up earlier and also later. After I get ready for school, like brushing my teeth and eating, my Dad or Mom drives me to school. My Dad prefers my Van and my mom prefers my Jeep. I live really close to school so it usually only takes me about 2 minutes to get to and from school.

In school, I have tons of different subjects like P.E, Humanities, Science, Math and we also have some different arts classes like, building percussion instruments and doing cool stuff in theater. At our school, it is necessary to have a laptop and most kids own an apple laptop. Eventually at 3:15 (which feels like forever) we get to go home.

My favorite  things to do in school are all really fun like recess, eating and middle school common time, which is where kids get to read or study in the commons of our school. I think something our school really needs is that it needs to have more fun events. This is something that our student council has taken into their hands.

About My town – Cole

 Challenge #2

Hi! My name is Cole, I live in the Hudson Valley and it’s awesome. I am going to be talking a bit about the attractions my home town, and things to do. You could walk along the Walkway Over the Hudson which takes about an hour to walk back and forth. You could go see the Mohonk preserve which has awesome views. You could also go to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s old home. Or you could even go to Vanderbilt Mansion. I have been to all of these places and they are all great.

I live in Poughkeepsie, New York. In Poughkeepsie there aren’t too many things to do, but it’s pretty rural, and you can do a ton of stuff with people nearby you because you have easy access with everybody around you. I love to run around my neighbourhood because aside from the city aspect of Poughkeepsie, The rural part is really amazing. There are several public parks around where I live, And we have great camps around us as well.

Poughkeepsie has some great places to eat. You could go to Crew which has some good food and it has an awesome vibe :). You could go to J dominick’s, which is an italian restaurant with gigantic serving sizes. You could also go to Bonsai which is a japanese restaurant with amazing food. It also has very nice decorations. You could go to Babycakes for a great breakfast or lunch. Or you could even go to  Five guys which is a burger restaurant which is the best in Poughkeepsie. You should totally visit the Hudson Valley some time.
