Your Digital Footprint – Cormac

Week 7:  Digital Footprint: Activity #5

Looking up myself, I found almost over 11 sites that trace back to me.  Apparently I have a large digital footprint.  A digital footprint is something servers like Google and Yahoo can find.  Think of it like a little sticker saying “I WAS HERE”.  When you enter information into the computer, it stays there.  A adept way of saying it is, a Digital Tattoo, since you can’t easily remove it.  It stays there for ever and ever.  When you log onto a site, that marks that you’ve been there.  Sometimes you don’t even know things you’re doing involve your digital footprint.  Remember when you looked up how to make a bomb the other day?  Just for fun?  Well, the government can see that you did that, and you might be treated suspiciously.  Being pulled aside in airports, that kind of thing.  When you IM or text your friend, that leaves a mark.  If you have a Gmail, Google can easily trace chat messages, and emails.  When you send an email, it goes through a bunch of servers right, but to do that, it needs to travel wirelessly. It can then be found, with enough skill and effort.  To protect your digital footprint, make sure you verify a website you’re going to log into.  Also make sure what you’re saying is appropriate.  But remember, the web can be a great tool, and you can have fun, as well.

Stereotypes – Cormac

Stereotypes, What They Are, and How They Negatively Affect Our Culture

Stereotyping is when people hold one picture, of a person, or idea in their mind, of what this thing is/should be.  For instance, a stereotypical man might be large, tanned, and ripped, with “manly” deodorant.  The reason I put “manly” in quotation marks, is because that is a stereotype all to itself.  The idea that something is manly, or feminine is ridiculous.

Personally, I think stereotyping is ridiculous, for the following reasons.

One, it’s a dumb way to think about people.  Why would this slightly overweight man, be worth less, than a ripped man?  Why would a beautiful woman supposedly be worth more, than a not so beautiful woman?  These ideas don’t make sense.

Another interesting thing, is that the media, and pop culture are a big influence on stereotyping, and racism and such.  For instance, on the cover of a new album, you will always see a handsome person.  Well, unless the point is to suggest otherwise.

Moving on to a different type of stereotyping-with data compiled in 2008, which was 5 years ago, African Americans, and Hispanics, comprised of 58% of all prisoners, even though they make up one quarter of the USA’s population.

Hitler, was a stereotyper, and also very discriminating..  He had his perfect race, and then the people he prosecuted.  Here is a list I found on this page.

The People Adolf Hitler Persecuted Because Of Stereotyping/Racism/Discrimination besides Jews:

  1. 2 Million Ethnic Poles

  2. 6 Million Soviet Citizens

  3. 2 Million Soviet POW’s

  4. 1.5 Million Gypsies

  5. 200,000 Physically and Mentally Retarded Germans.

Of course this was not just stereotyping, I think it was a combination of racism, and stereotyping.  The main stereotyping here was Hitler’s “Master Race”.  Someone who had blond hair, blue eyes, and fair skin, would be considered to be a part of the

“Master Race”.  I would be one of those people, and I actually feel kind of awkward about it.  I don’t think I’m  better than you, if you are Hispanic, with dark hair.  To wrap up, I don’t think stereotyping is legal human right, or any human right, but I do believe that, not stereotyping is a human right, even if it’s not labeled, stereotyping.

In my opinion, stereotyping could be stopped by:

1. Media not constantly portraying hot people.

2  Pop culture not being defined on how the artist/producer/generator/manufacturer/ad man looks.

Also, if people would keep a more open mind on this issue, I think it would pretty much stop.  I believe that racism, and stereotyping are interlocked in some cases, and that the Holocaust was a good example of both.

A History Of Stereotypes.

As all old ideas were, stereotypes were began long ago.  Take slaves for example.  Another mixture of racism and stereotypes.  Slaves were forced into existence because people thought blacks were bad.  (The stereotype).  People beat them because they thought they were black.  (The racism).  People just need to STOP racism and stereotypes.

Future Me – Challenge 9A – by Cormac

Blog Post for #9A

Hi, I decided to create a future narrative of me.  In doing so, I used a false name and created a job/family for myself that you will learn about.  I made this prezi so that people could see what I want to be like in the future. It’s supposed to express my current interests, and interests that I might have in the future. When I made it, I was really excited to use the format I used, but then I realized that I had to also write, to make it a really good post. On that token, I’ve decided to add a introduction and a conclusion. The important thing about an introduction is that it pulls the reader in, instead of just throwing them face first into my prezi. It lets the reader know what I am going to talk about or show.  The important thing about the conclusion is that it draws the reader out, instead of just leaving them hanging. Here’s a wiki link to a wiki that will tell you all about film directors.

In conclusion, that was kind of who I want to grow up to be.  I like movies and I like acting a lot to.  That kinda leads me down the road of being a director or movie star don’t you agree?  Ask me some questions about my future below!  By the way, the picture in my prezi was done by this man.

Global Warming-Cormac

Simulated Interview…Challenge #4

Rep:

Good morning Professor Joe Higgins. (Not a real person)

Prof:

Good morning Icy, how are you doing today?

Rep:

Really great thanks.

Prof:

Good.  Good.  So, why did you need me to come in today?

Rep:

Well, I wanted to ask you some questions about Global Warming.

Prof:

Ah.  I should have known.  Fire away then.

Rep:

What is the most influential part of global warming?  In your opinion.

Prof:

I’d rather not answer that Icy.

Rep:

Because your afraid of the pro-warming league out there?

Prof:

No.  Because I don’t understand the question, IcyLime

Rep:

Oh.  Well, what do you think the most dangerous part of global warming is?

Prof:

Hmmm.  Let me see, um, probably the fact that scientists think that global warming is going to go up quite a lot this century.  Or maybe the fact that there will be more extreme weather, such as more droughts, heavier rainfall, ocean acidification, sea levels rising, and more species going extinct.  Check this out.

Rep:

Wow.  Thats…impressive.

Prof:

Yes sirree!

Rep:

Do you have any idea what a big factor of global warming is?

Prof:

Well, one things for sure, greenhouse gas, which comes from human activities, such as, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation.

Rep:

We’ll get to that later.

Prof:

Okay, why’d you ask me?

Rep:

Never mind OK?

Lets talk more about the sea level rising.

Prof:

Okay.  It’s simple really, the sea level will rise, and eventually more, and more will be under water, so if you buying a beachfront house, with out a sea wall…DON’T!

Rep:

Good, solid advice.

Prof:

Lets take a break Icy.

Rep:

Alright.

Rep:

Alright everyone, we’re back.

So, Joe Higgins, what are people trying to do about global warming?

Prof:

Well, some are going to try to adapt to it’s effects. which I take to mean that, they will simply adjust.  But my question for them is, will they ever have to stop adjusting?  If they don’t do anything about, and merely adjust, then warming will just continue and continue, until, the temperature has gone up enough that no one will be able to deal with it, and it’ll be to late.

Rep:

I most certainly agree!  Thanks for coming in Mr. Higgins!

Prof:

No problem sir, goodbye!

Challenge 4

A Day In The Life Of: Cormac

I get up at about 5:30 in the morning, which is kind of annoying.

For breakfast, I have cereal, or eggs and toast.  For lunch, I have a sandwich, or whatever is for lunch at school. Usually, it’s something very interesting, and we probably haven’t had it before.  For dinner, it’s never very definite.

Whenever I have a break, I like to read a good book, or maybe play computer games.  Speaking of breaks, I like all the breaks we have at school, snack, lunch and common time, where we hang out and study, or help with small jobs around the school.

Another annoying thing about timing, related to school, is that the ride to school can take 45-60 minutes. If the traffic’s bad then it’s more like 60minutes, although, school is totally worth it.  I love school, because of all the choices we have, like which electives we want to do.

Our electives  are our arts classes.  Right now, for this trimester, I have Foundations In Theater.  Foundations In Theater is all about acting games, that develop our acting skills, like our boat game.  The stage is the boat, and if the captain yells “Port!” then we run left.  If they yell “Starboard!” we run to the right.  There are lots of other fun games to.  I have Fabrication Lab, which most people call Fab Lab.  In Fab Lab, we have lots of fun programming and building circuits.  My partner and I, made two lights alternately flash!  Pretty beginner, but then again, that’s exactly what we are!  Then for my third and and final elective, I have Percussion Instrument Building, where we are going to build percussion instruments.  So far, all we have done is experiment with different rhythms, and come up with some of our own.  It’s really fun!

Challenge 3

About My Town – Cormac

I live in a town called Gardiner, but I’m going to tell you about New Paltz, since it’s right next to Gardiner, and has a lot of interesting history.  There is one street, called Huguenot St. that has tons of historically preserved houses on it.  These houses have a lot of historical value, and I once went on a tour there.  I live by Mohonk, and Lake Minnewaska.  I always get the two confused, but I think Mohonk, is the mountains where the people do a lot of hiking. Sometimes my mom takes my sister and I to Lake Minnewaska, to swim, and we pack a lunch, and it’s all really fun.  I love all the restaurants that are available – they offer a delectable cuisine and especially, the Mountain Bistro, and the Bistro in New Paltz.  My town is really great.  Gardiner, has a lot of interesting things to do though, as well. Please come to our town soon!
