The Cost Of Challah – By Sarah

To defy someone’s rights of free religion is a violation of human rights. During the years 1939 through 1945, the Jewish people were prosecuted and put in concentration camps. Today that would be a violation of human rights, but some time ago when the Holocaust happened  is was not raised up on a gold platter but it was still legal. Germany was in a large amount of debt at the time. What happens sometimes when a country falls into debt they decide to take their anger out on a group of people or culture. In this case, it was the Jewish people. The Nazis, as they were called, decided to take their anger out in in a horrible way. They put the Jews in concentration camps where they had to work with no pay, very bad conditions and little food. The Holocaust killed about  two and a half million Jewish people.

One big thing that stopped the Nazis was the resistance and the allies of the Jews. Lots of places had resistance, like Denmark, France, Holland and many Scandinavian Counties. The resistance in all countries boned trains, stole from nozie camps and protected the prosicuted people. The after some time more people began to take a stand, more and more people joined the rebellion and work to help stop good from getting to germany and messages from germany to the nozie camps. When the resistance would balm train because the train usually had firearms going state to the nozies or as said for goods for germany. This made a big impact in the holocaust.

After time the madness came to a stop. The jews who had fled to Sweden returned home. People had the sabbath diner in peace. With home made challah that was made with eggs, sugar and flower. Which were all things that the european jews went on a shortage of huring that sad period of time. The fight was finally over and so all the word seemed to find a good result because of it. #BAD13  #13stubc http://www.yadvashem.org/

Global Read Aloud – by Sarah

Can you imagine a world where you could not talk or move voluntarily? The main character Melody in the book Out Of My Mind cannot talk or move, but her emotions are still there and her mind is working. In fact she is brilliant. The middle school that I go to (Poughkeepsie Day School) is reading this book as Global Read Aloud. Global Read Aloud is when schools all around the world read the same book. Some schools are reading the book in the language that they use in everyday life, and some are reading it in a language that they are learning. Schools are communicating with each other and talking about the book. Schools Skype, live tweet, blog back and forth and some email.

The book Out Of My Mind was not chosen randomly. I think it was chosen for a set of reasons. One of the reasons I think is that this is such a unique story. The story is also beautifully worded. One example is that at the beginning the author chose to write this, “Word have always swirled around me like snowflakes – each one delicate and different, each one melting untouched in my hands.” Sharon M Draper the author painted an image with her words. I think one of the main attractions of this book for the Global Read Aloud is that it writes about something that not many kids reading the book are familiar. The situation that Melody has is called cerebral palsy. I think Out Of My Mind was a good choice for Global Read Aloud. If your school did not do it this year maybe you can do it next year.

My Family – by Sarah

The first to come to the USA in my family was Julius Lewit. His wife was Camilla Lewit. Julius came four generations ago. Camilla (Julius’s wife) maiden name was Abeles. Then she married Julius and came to America from Bohemia. They had five children Bertha, Harry, Richard, Martha and Walter. Walter met and married my great grandmother Rona. They had two kids Bill and Bob. Bill got together with Gloria and had one kid. His name was Ric. Ric married Alison  and they had two girls Sarah and Rebecca. If you think that it is a simple family well you would be wrong in this instance. The only people in my family to have one child was my grand parents and that leaves me with a lot of cousins. See you at the next family reunion.

This Is Africa – by Sarah

Have you ever taken a trip overseas? When I was five, my family took a trip to Africa. We went to South Africa and Zimbabwe. First, I should explain why we were going to Africa. At the time (2008) Zimbabwe was  a very dangerous place. We went to visit family friends of ours. They were there because their dad Jim was working  to help put Zimbabwe in a better position. My dad is good friends with their dad. They were there for a year. I was and still am best friends with the daughter Muriel and my sister was really good friend with her older sister Sadie, although they have grown apart over the years. Their mom’s name is Amy and she is very close to my mom. We flew from New York City to London for a plane change. Then finally to Cape Town South Africa.

Jim picked us up from the airport. We got into the car. At the first stop light we stopped with a red light. When we stopped, a young child came to our car window. He asked for food or money. This is the only way those kids families can make money and if we gave them food that might be all they have to eat all day for them and their families. This happened at almost every stop light. That’s another thing about South Africa and Zimbabwe, most people just run right through the stop lights because you never know whether or not that light has been red for 10 seconds or 10 years.

When we got to Zimbabwe aour friend came to get us. They drove us to their house in Zimbabwe. The house had three gates. Those were all for protection of us and the house. So many amazing things and people  live in Africa. Maybe I will go back some time?

US Government Shut Down – Sarah

Challenge #4 Activity #4

The US government has shut down. This is a big issue because there are a lot of websites that people use that are not open. Some people’s jobs are on hold because of this and they are not getting paid.  Even more annoying is the fact that  Congress is still getting paychecks. This all happened for a reason that I will explain. When the bill for Obama Care passed it was fine, but there were a number of people in Congress that did not want to put out the funding for it. As a result of this congress has shut down. This created a huge problem. Lots of things have shut down, including places like Yellowstone and The Statue of Liberty, which has put all the small businesses that depend on the national parks in a tough position. As President Obama said “ I want all the people to recognize that the Government is America’s largest employer, 2 million civilian workers and 1.4 million active duty military in all 50 states and all around the world.”

Debt is another thing that may come from the shutdown. If the shutdown last 3 or 4 weeks this may become a huge problem. Even stocks have gone down making the situation even worse. Luckily people think a conclusion will come before anything drastic happens.

The shutdown has become a huge mess. If it is not fixed in the next week or so it may become an even bigger problem. Let us hope things are resolved in a short amount of time.

The Town I Live In Sarah

Challenge #2

The town I live in is called Rhinebeck. It’s a dinky little village, yet the town itself spreads quite far.  Fall in Rhinebeck is beautiful. All the leaves on the trees change and the air becomes crisp. As always apples begin to grow on the trees. Cider is also huge during fall.  In winter white snow covers the ground like a cold blanket. There are flowers blooming so you know it’s spring. There are some amazing and breathtaking walks. At places like Ferncliff Forest, if you go up the fire tower, the view of the Hudson will amaze you. Summer is a time for no school and enjoyment. The town is an amazing place because, if you want to relax and go to the library or swim the day through, it’s possible. You can even do both. The time that brings the most people to Rhinebeck is the Dutchess County Fair. The seasons are not the only things that bring people to Rhinebeck. There’s food, shopping and historical sites. The food in Rhinebeck Is amazing. There are fancy restaurants and more casual places. There is also gelato, and there are candy shops. Under the category of shopping we have Daryls, a cute boutique. The Rhinebeck Department Store  sells a great shirt that reads London, Rome, Paris, Rhinebeck. No Sugar is an adorable, little business that sells beautiful kids clothes and elegant clothing  for people who are a bit older.  History around Rhinebeck involves places like the Beekman Arms Inn, and homes around the town that have been there for many years. Well, that’s Rhinebeck in a nutshell. l hope you come and visit us soon!

All About Me, Sarah

Me??? What should I say? When you meet someone what do you automatically say? Hi, I guess, so I’ll say Hi. My name is Sarah and I’m in sixth grade. I go to Poughkeepsie Day school. With my family I have gone many places such as South Africa and Zimbabwe. I dance, so that keeps me busy. The dance classes I take are Ballet and Hip Hop. I listen to music daily, mostly on the bus. Drawing is also something I love to do. Fairy tales are some of my favorites books because I love old stories. Shakespeare stories are also some of my favorites. Plays like Romeo and Juliet are fun to read.
