Letter to Denis – Xavier

Dear Denis,

Hello, my name is Xavier and I live in New York. I saw your movie about how you and Francis tried to follow in Marco Polo’s footsteps.  I saw the movie with my 6th grade Humanities class. We have a blog with a bunch of good stuff. The link is the word “blog” in the previous sentence.

We started a unit in class all about Marco Polo. Every day we watched the videos of you and Francis on your Adventure. I learned so much about you  and about all the places you visited. It was like a plane ride across the world. You saw so many cool places and I loved when Francis got the tattoo from the locals. I wish I was could go on Marco Polo’s journey because it looked like so much fun. Are you  going to do something like that again? Did you ever get to touch Marco Polo’s will? I would love for you guys to come to our school.

Xavier,
From Poughkeepsie Day School

Student Led Conference by Xavier

In my school every year, we have SLC’s (Student-Led Conference.) SLC’s are regular parent-teacher conferences except that we the students get to lead the conference and plan the whole conference. For my SLC I made a slideshow presentation. I made fifteen slides about what I am skilled, what I need to work on and some things I can improve. The SLC is only thirty minutes so I would want to use as much time as possible to present myself.

I had to really think about the year and what I did  when I was making my presentation. Three of my slides had pictures of some pieces of work I made well, while another three slides had pieces of work I did not do so well on. I also had some slides where I showed my goals for the rest of the school year and following year. Another group of slides were my strengths and weaknesses. I showed what I am skilled in and what I am not.

The day of the Student Led Conference, I was prepared and ready to go. I talked very confidently and I didn’t get nervous or tense up. I talked a little too fast so I had a lot of time at the end for questions. My parents loved my presentation and they said I came well equipped for the conference. They gave me a lot suggestions and comments and told me that they were going help me with whatever I need help in.  I think I did a really good job with my SLC.

How has technology changed the way we work? By Xavier

Blogging Challenge #6

Technology has totally changed the way we work. It has helped in so many ways. Before we had computers we had to send everything by mail which took a very long time, compared to sending email.  We now have tools like PowerPoint to show our presentations and explain our point (visually).  Technology lets us Skype people for business calls all around the world instead of travelling for a business meeting.  We can also research information on the computer faster then before and there is more information to get. Technology has made work easier in every way.

Observation Poem by Xavier

Cool teens swagger in to the room, looking  tired and bored.
Laughs and jokes come from the teens as they enter.
A student  tells a joke in the middle of class; the teacher is mad.
Seeing the students work hard after the teacher told them to stop fooling around.
Smelling my breakfast sandwich all “baconny” and cheesy.
Ringing of cell phones all  silenced by the students.
Only some know the math problem on the board, the rest try with all their effortsto solve it.
On the tables I see many papers being worked on.
My mother talks with teen after teen and tries to help them with their troubles.

TinTin Picture Challenge Space – Xavier

“Look it’s a space rover,” I told my friend Jacob. We climbed out of the cave and followed it around Mars. Finally Jacob told me the rover wasn’t helping us. We walked back to our cave with all of our equipment. “Jacob we need to really find some gems or jewels quick because my oxygen level is low” I explained. We got our Molecule Atom Destroyers (M.A.D for short) and started mining. After some time mining, we found a jewel the size of a bowling ball. Jacob and I danced for joy. We rushed back to the spaceship and called Commander Rice at head base on our monitor. Commander Rice told us our space expedition was done. We gathered all of our materials from the cave, got into our spaceship and left Mars.
It took us two days to get back home from our journey to Mars. When we got home, Jacob and I were really excited to see our family members. Today we went to the space station to give Commander Rice the jewel. When Jacob and I went to give Commander Rice the jewel, he said, “Good job young champs; I need you two to go back to Mars and find more jewels.”
Jacob and I thought about the offer and I said,” If we go get you more jewels we should get more of the profit than you.”  Commander Rice agreed and sent us back onto our voyage.

We finally arrived at Mars in search of the cave  we found the first time we were there. We found the same cave and  went inside the cave with all our mining gear. The cave was pitch black which was weird because we never took down the lights from our last visit. I told Jacob to be ready for anything unusual. I heard a quick,”qpkshjurm#^” and then heard Jacob saying, “Help me, don’t let it get you!” I took out my M.A.D  and prepared for battle. I felt stone hard hands grab on to me and pull me into the darkness along with my screaming friend….

Blogging Challenge Week 9 – Xavier

These are some of the 2012 Republican candidates for the president: Michele Bachman, Jon Huntsman, Herman Caine, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich Russ Perot and Rick Perry. I read a short Bio on each of the candidates.  I have also been listening to the news and reading about them.

Romney is leading in the polls right now. Caine was tied with Romney until four women came forward to the press and said Caine sexually harassed them. Caine is also having some “goofs” on foreign policy which make people think he’s not prepared to be president. Rick Perry also made a “goof” at the Republican debate when he couldn’t name the third agency he wanted to get rid of.  Gingrich is in second place because of Caine and Perry’s “goof.

Democrats like Huntsman best but he’s a Conservative and he’s at the bottom of the polls. Bachman and Perot are also at the bottom of the polls.I think Romney will be nominated to go against Obama. I also think Romney will lose against Obama if he is nominated, because of Romney’s healthcare bill while he was governor of Massachusetts.  Romney’s healthcare bill was just like Obama’s healthcare bill and Republicans hate Obama’s healthcare law.

Mrs. Gregory’s 6th Grade and the Applegate Blog – By Xavier

Challenge #10

Mrs. Gregory’s 6th grade blog is amazing. The first thing I like about this blog is that there is a post every month on the star bloggers. I think it is very cool to have a post about kids who have a goal every week. For example last week the students tried to get the most comments. Another Thing I like about this blog is that there are so many web 2.0 tools used:  you even have a page with just web 2.0 tools on it. My favorite web 2.0 tool is Pixton because I can create a video comic and a regular comic. Finally, I also like that Mrs. Gregory’s 6th grade makes videos of their class work like the Diet Coke and Mentos project then makes a post about what they learned. I hope everyone checks out their blog Mrs. Gregory’s 6th Grade.

Mrs. Applegate’s blog is awesome. One thing I like about her blog is that she has the homework for school on the blog in case the students forget. I think it is a really good idea to do that because you can see all the details to the homework. Another thing I like is that each student has a section of the blog and can customize their own section. I also like that there are daily questions like, “How was your day?” or “Write about a field trip”, and students have to respond in the comments.  Check it out at Mrs. Applegate’s blog.
