In PDS middle school, at 10:30 on September 23rd, was the start of a new experience for 6th graders. That day was the first buddy, mentor program! We were to mentor/help the pre-k and k students. I honestly didn’t know what to think and I only hoped for the best. As Shirley ended her talk, we started heading out to our first buddy day…
Today we had our first buddy experience. We were sent down to the pre-k k classes and began our journeys for stuff… I think. We walked in to find an empty classroom full of miniature chairs, tables etc., etc. After a few minutes, the little ones started milling in. Their eyes brightened up as they saw some familiar faces. They ran into said people’s laps and started excited small talk. After a few moments of letting us students talk, the teachers explained the reasons we were are all here. Elementary it was, to be honest. We were to work with our selected youngsters for the school year. After the talk, we played a name game involving stating our favorite ice-cream flavor. As we finished, they told us to get to know each other a little bit better. The 6th graders went around talking to the pre-k and k students. I hung out with a little kid named Ross and hoped I would become his partner because he was a lot like me (except maybe a bit cooler and smaller). At the end I got partnered up with Eamonn and his little sister.
After we got our partners, we went outside to play with them. The K teacher was snapping photos of us, so I flashed a peace sign as we heard the click of the camera. Then it was time for some fun! I watched as everyone enjoyed with their buddy, something I couldn’t do. You see, I have no tolerance for little kids, like my dad, and his dad, and so on. Plus, I’ve had many bad experiences with little kids, or as I call them, family reunions. Anyone under the age of 61/2 had it in their minds that they were to be the bane of my existence. Yeah, not so fun for the innocent 11 year old. Anyways, I tried to set things right and end the bane of existence thing.
I followed my buddy around letting her play around with her friends. I went to the swings seeing that Eamonn was playing with his little sister and watched them from there. I had left him for a minute and Eamonn had managed to get caught by two 5 year olds, sad. So, I ended up prison-breaking him and Quinn from the clutches of youth. Yeah after a few times, yelling “prison break” got quite old. A bunch of kids were playing Duck, Duck, Goose and we decided to join. After chasing Eamonn and singing, “Can’t touch this” (and then falling on my face) it was time to go in. We went back and said our farewells. After that, well, you know the rest…
