Awesome Otters Week#7 – By Olive

I have always liked otters. When I was little I always wanted to be a one. I thought that the idea of being able to dart underwater and catch fish sounded fun! When I was at the pool I would practice holding my breath. These are some things I know about North American river otters. A North American river otter is a mammal that is a part of the mustelid or weasel family. Some of the different members of the weasel family are, BADGER, WOLVERINE, FERRET,  and more.

You can Identify otters for their stout body, short legs, tapered tail and glossy fur. Otters stout body, webbed feet, flat head, and their closable nostrils help them get around and hunt underwater easily. Their eyes, ears, and nose are on the top of their head so they can see, hear, and smell better while the rest of there body is in water. Fur color can range from light brown to black, with a lighter, grayish colored chin and throat. River otters can be found in all watersheds of New York.

Otters eyes are shaped in a way that helps their underwater vision be sharper in situations where the water is murky. They use their ‘motion sensitive’ whiskers that help them cue in on prey location and movement. Although fish comprise the majority of their diet, amphibians and crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates are also taken when available. They are mainly only social with there the other otters in their family.  These are some pictures of some North American otters! One of them I drew.

Week 7 Dear Deer – By Alex

This week is all about nature. We can write about anything if it is not man made. For example trees – trees were here when the earth was formed in the first place. All the animals like deer, moose, dogs and even cats are all natural. Each one can have babies and that makes more of them so they can be a bigger population in the world.

For this about post about nature I’m going to write about moose and deer. They are both very very fast animals but I have to say that the deer is just a bit faster then the moose. Deer sometimes can grow antlers but moose can grow really big antlers. Deer are mostly afraid if they see something coming at them so they run away but if the target is still following them, they will turned around at the last moment and try to kill or at least injury the target it is facing. The deer is quick and when in battle if it is fighting to protect its cubs, they will fight till they die.

Here is a wonderful picture of a deer just eating or having a little snack. though prickers are not effective.  Young_Bucks.jpg                                                                                                                                                 Jill    Schad       via Compfight

For a snack or food deer eat plants, fruits, acorns and nuts. Deer will eat anything even if it is on the ground. For example, they eat twigs, fallen leaves and tiny branches. Also deer look like they have not that much fur but really they have so much. This deer is what we called a horned deer but only male deer can have horns because as you can see it has 2 horns on its head. This deer is by a little river. It is a bit dangerous for a deer to be out in wild open surface because of HUNTERS! Hunters can kill deer for their good meat. But deer try to stay away from hunters and if hunters see them they’re going to aim really hard and fire their guns.

Now a little bit about moose. Moose are the animals who really get horn or antlers because some people called them that. Okay back to moose

This moose has full grown antlers on its head so it can pick up stuff more easy but the down side when getting under something is going to be a little tricky.

Some interesting facts:

  • the males have big antlers
  • so tall have to eat taller grass
  • in winter moose eat shrubs and pine cones
  • moose are most common at lakes rivers mostly any medium bodies of water

Week #7 All About Horses – By Annie

Cali Larah McElroy via Compfight

My Topic is about Horses! I love horses, I own four but you’ll learn about them in my presentation. For now my goal is to share most of what I know with you! There are many different colors of horses like, Dun, Chestnut, Dark Bay, Light Bay, Bay, Gray, Dapple grey and many different colors. Here are some fun facts:

  • they have four legs
  • they have 250 bones
  • they are over 350 different breeds
    • Arabians
    • Thoroughbreds
    • Welsh ponies
    • Shires
    • Clydesdales
    • Appaloosa
    • Mustangs
    • Exmoor ponies
    • American Quarter Horses
    • Shetland ponies
    • Miniature ponies
    • and many more

Horses run very early after they are born. A baby female horse is called a filly and a male baby horse is called a colt. Overall a baby horse is called a foal. A grownup female is called a mare. A male grownup horse called a stallion. Horses can sleep standing up and lying down. They like to roll in their pastures to keep cool. The Latin name for horse is “Equus caballus”. They are super loyal and don’t want anything to happen to their riders. They are prey and not predator, which means in the wild they get hunted versus hunting. click here to learn more.

I love all animals, but I especially love Horses ! I want to help horses that are being abused because that’s not right. One of the biggest problem with using horses in cities is carriage horses in cities. The horses are used to pull carriages to carry tourists in many cities.  They have to work many long hours. It’s bad for their feet and it’s very dangerous because the roads are too slippery for their horse shoes.

Thanks for learning with me!

Week #4 Blogging Challenge -Activity #3 By: Annie

Activity #3: Write a post about how you celebrate Halloween.

My Family and I celebrate Halloween by dressing up. Sometimes we do group costumes but most of the time I only dress up. I’ve been a lot of things in the past, like princesses when I was little, Hermione in my Harry Potter phase and a lot more! This year I’m going to be a pinata.  We also go trick-or-treating with my friends. I tend to eat all of my candy before the night is over! I love seeing everyone’s costumes, as it’s just a lot of fun! After Christmas, Halloween’s the best (in my opinion)!

This is not me, but  it is a general idea of what I’m going to look like.

Blogging Challenge Week #5 Activity #1

My family  is from a country called Pakistan ( except we  live in America). In Pakistan we eat a lot of different foods that are all very spicy because we like to eat spicy food. (My grandma is from there and makes Pakistani food). The food we eat is very similar to indian food. Anyway, some things that we eat are,  Naan or  roti , which is a type of bread. Naan is more  soft and fluffy while roti is more dry.(I like naan better). We eat this with chicken or Kebab ( which is basically meat either round or long). They taste like  meat with a lot of spice ( but it usually depends on how the person makes it. I personally like both,( I’m a meat eater). We also eat brown rice or white rice with chicken or lamb.  Chicken from my country is spicy ,and very delicious. I don’t really like lamb though. For dessert we have a lot of things. I don’t really like Pakistani desserts that much but a lot of people do. Anyway, the things that are mostly popular , are Gulab Jamaan which are  milky balls dipped into syrup. We also eat Kulfi which is dessert based on milk. Ras Malai which is also based off of milk but is more liquidy. Barfi which comes in square shape. All of these desserts mostly taste sweet. Anyway, these are just some of the things we eat  from Pakistan.

Blog Post #5 Activity number one by Caidin

Blogging Challenge #5

Hello my name is Caidin from Shirley’s 6th grade. One of America’s favorite foods are Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. You can make them any way toasted cooked and with any cheese like Gouda, Goat, Cheddar Etc. The reason Americans like grilled cheese, is because it is a combination of another two of our favorite foods which are bread and cheese. When they come together they make a great tasting sandwich. One of the most amazing things to pair it with is tomato soup. Tomato soup and Grilled Cheese is the most savory pair of foods ever. John Montagu created the sandwich then he took it stuck cheese on it and voila the Grilled Cheese Sandwich. If you want to read our blog click here. Thank you for reading and happy blogging.

We normally eat this during entertainment like movies and plays.

Popcorn is a certain kind of corn. When you put the kernels in the right temperature it will start growing and making a popping sound. Here is a slow motion video of it popping (on youtube). The name Popcorn came from the name popping corn. People cover popcorn with butter, salt, caramel, chocolate, cheese etc. You can mix it with basically everything. Popcorn is really good and soft. You can pop it at home or buy it already popped at the store. This is what popcorn sounds like and looks like when it is popping (on youtube).

Week 5 Student Blogging Challenge – Isaac

Activity #1

A food that the United States is famous for is it’s Buffalo wings. These (surprisingly) un-breaded spicy or mild delights are made from a portion of a chicken’s wing which is deep fried and coated with Cayenne pepper hot sauce and a little butter. These are often served with celery and bleu cheese.

Buffalo wings were first invented by Teressa Bellissimo (who owned a bar with her husband Frank). “Upon the unannounced, late-night arrival of their son, Dominic, with several of his friends from college, Teressa needed a fast and easy snack to present to her guests. It was then that she came up with the idea of deep frying chicken wings (normally thrown away or reserved for stock) and tossing them in cayenne hot sauce.”  Lots of stories like those have circulated around the world and it’s hard to know which story is true. But that doesn’t matter. What does matter is that those wings taste good!
