Human rights are extremely important when it comes to human beings’ lives. They make the world a better place to live and make life better. Without human rights, the world would have even more chaos than it does now. A very important human right is article 26 “everyone has the right to education.” Every child and adult deserves to have education. Many places around the world disobey the human right and don’t let people have proper education. I think that is very wrong and should be stopped because education for all is a human right.

Many places in the world follow the human right, while other places sadly don’t. In Pakistan, an amazing 16 year old girl named Malala Yousafzai stood up for girls rights to education. At the age of 13, she started standing up for girls who didn’t get education. During her protests she got shot in the head while she was at the Taliban. Luckily, she survived and then unfortunately went into a coma in which thankfully she came out of. Once she “woke-up” she wrote a book called “I Am Malala” talking about her story. She has become very, very inspirational and popular for MANY people. I think she is an amazing girl who should continue fighting for her rights and everyone else’s. I hope that her courage and outgoingness can rub off on everyone else in the world to make it a better, happier place.

In conclusion, all human rights are important. People in the U.S.A and many other places who follow The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, almost take human rights for granted. Without them, those places would be in terrible shape like Pakistan and other places in the Middle East. Luckily women, men, and children in the countries that completely follow the declaration of human rights, don’t have to suffer and don’t have as much unfairness like in the other countries. I am glad that Malala Yousafzai had enough courage to speak up and act so boldly. I think that everyone having the right to education is very important, and I hope that the countries who don’t follow article 26, will soon follow it for fairness.

100 Word Challenge By Erik

I opened the door. Thud! A peanut hit me straight in the forehead.  I feel back a little but quickly balanced myself. Another peanut hit me this time in the chest.  Before Jacob could throw another one I dove into his room and hid behind a desk. More peanuts came flying at me.  I looked around me but there was nothing for me to throw at him. Finally I picked up some of the broken peanuts that Jacob had thrown at me and threw them back at him.  After a minute I had none left. I had nowhere to go!

CHALLENGE #10 – Cam

From the point of view of an adult-

I wrote a lot of posts, about 7-10

  • How many were school based, your own interests or set by the challenge?

Most were school based, pretty much all of them.

I got about 5 comments overall. One from a teacher, three from family members and one from a classmate

  • Which post received the most comments? Why do you think that happened?

My scary story got the most comments. I think that was the case because it had a really gripping title.

  • Did you change blog themes at all and why?

I don’t know what that means

  • How many widgets do you have? Do you think this is too many or not enough?

I didn’t have any widgets at all. I think i should have added more.

I had zero students from overseas.

Blogging Challenge #9- Elizabeth

There is a heron who comes to our pond and eats our fish. Five years ago my dad created a pond to control the water that was flowing down our hill. We put 12 koi into the pond and now we have more than 50. The heron has been coming to our pond for three years. We see it in the fall and the spring. Lately, the heron has been coming a lot and it is very dangerous for the fish. We put a net over the pond but the heron pierced one of the fish through the net and then flew away. Also, to keep themselves protected, the fish hide under the lily pads in the ponds so that the heron can’t find them.

It’s unusual for the heron to be around still at this time because most herons migrate south for the winter. Usually herons migrate because they rely on fish for food and when the water freezes they cannot eat them anymore. However, the water in our pond is always running and never freezes and that’s why our heron stays. Some herons will stay in the same place year round if the weather is warm enough. Herons also eat frogs, salamanders, lizards, snakes, young birds, small mammals, shrimp, crabs, crayfish, dragonflies, grasshoppers and many aquatic invertebrates.

Koi are the most popular fresh-water ornamental pond fish and are often referred to as being “living jewels” or “swimming flowers”. Koi are a variety of the common carp, Cyprinus Carpio. Carp fossils have been discovered in South China dating back about 20 million years. Some varieties are known for their hardiness, which records claim can live for long periods of time if simply wrapped in wet moss continuously kept damp. Some authorities believe Koi originated in Persia and spread throughout the ancient world. Our smallest Koi are 2-3 inches and our biggest one are 19 or 20. We have orange and white fish and now that they mated we have mixed colors.

Mrs. Gregory’s 6th Grade and the Applegate Blog – By Xavier

Challenge #10

Mrs. Gregory’s 6th grade blog is amazing. The first thing I like about this blog is that there is a post every month on the star bloggers. I think it is very cool to have a post about kids who have a goal every week. For example last week the students tried to get the most comments. Another Thing I like about this blog is that there are so many web 2.0 tools used:  you even have a page with just web 2.0 tools on it. My favorite web 2.0 tool is Pixton because I can create a video comic and a regular comic. Finally, I also like that Mrs. Gregory’s 6th grade makes videos of their class work like the Diet Coke and Mentos project then makes a post about what they learned. I hope everyone checks out their blog Mrs. Gregory’s 6th Grade.

Mrs. Applegate’s blog is awesome. One thing I like about her blog is that she has the homework for school on the blog in case the students forget. I think it is a really good idea to do that because you can see all the details to the homework. Another thing I like is that each student has a section of the blog and can customize their own section. I also like that there are daily questions like, “How was your day?” or “Write about a field trip”, and students have to respond in the comments.  Check it out at Mrs. Applegate’s blog.

Blogging challenge #10

So far this year, I have enjoyed having a class blog. I have written seven posts based upon a paragraph about myself, my scary story, my trip to  F.D.R farm property, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Challenge #5, and my post about having no school. I will soon be posting two more posts, which will be challenge #9 and the post I am writing now. Then I will have all the nine posts that I need. I promoted our blog to my family members and I received comments! I have three comments on my no school post, one on my F.D.R trip, and two on my scary story, including the paragraph about myself. All together, I have eight comments. The posts I didn’t mention are still waiting to receive comments. My favorite post was writing the paragraph about myself, because it was fun thinking of ways to express myself to people around the world. By expressing myself, I came up with many thoughts and ideas that I may not thought of before I wrote them down. After I finished the post, I received one comment from my mom, and I replied back, so that’s how I ended up with two comments on that post. The same could be said about my other blog posts. It was challenging and enjoyable not only to write about myself but also about interesting things our class did together.

On our blog, we have a theme that is black with Ancient statues, and we haven’t changed it since the end of last month. If we change the background more often, it will make our blog more interesting so our visitors can be excited rather than being bored. We should also add more widgets to persuade more people to learn more about web 2.0 tools. We have seven widgets, which is fine for now. We could add a virtual pet to our blog which might help us get more views and comments from other people around the world.

I’m looking forward to doing the blogging challenge again in March. I think our class will have a four day trip to report on at that point. It would be great to continue sharing blogs with my family, friends and others in the future.

Blogging challenge #9 – By Massimo

Blogging challenge #9  Skate boardingSkate boarding is one of my biggest passions. I first got my skate board when I was  6 years old. I tried to ride but it was so much harder than I thought. Eventually when I was about 8, I got better at it so I went to a skate park near by. I kept practicing and practicing until I went down ramps. I have a friend who skates, so we worked together. When my friend and I got really good we dared each other to go down the 7 foot drop in ramp. We both did it on the first try but it scared us.

I also really like long boarding. My favorite brand is Bustin Boards I really like their different types of designs. It’s much harder than the regular type of skate boarding. One of the reasons is that you can turn way easier so if you lean to far you will fall off. Another reason is that you are supposed to go really fast down hills which is really fun. One time I loosened the trucks of the skate board too much so I totally fell off and cut up my knees. I had to walk all the way back home before I could feel bad. I started liking long boards when dad got his second one. It wasn’t long at all but they only made 100 of them. On my B-day my dad gave me that board and I freaked out.

Name: my board                             Taken by: Massimo

My dad started the long board addiction in me. As I said before, he got it for me on my birthday so it meant a lot to me. My dad and I always want to go skate boarding when we can. When I skate board I like to go over my limits and just have fun. It’s also really important to me because I have a lot of father and son time. Skate boarding in general is really important to me because I wouldn’t have as many funny and not so funny stories I have today.

REAL MADRID

BY CAM BROWN

Real Madrid is my favorite soccer team in the world. I was introduced to Real Madrid when my dad’s exchange student from Spain came to visit us in New York City for lunch. The exchange students name is Juan and he has kept in touch with my dad all those years. Juan is from Madrid, Spain and his favorite team is Real Madrid as well. He showed me pictures of Real Madrid and everything. I, at 5 years old, was instantly hooked. I would like to
share my love for Real Madrid with you.

Real Madrid Current Logo

Real Madrid was founded March 6, 1902 by two Catalan brothers named Juan and Carlo Padros, and is based in Madrid, Spain, that was 109 years ago. According to records, Real Madrid has won the most titles and championships in sports history. They have won 31( and counting) La Liga ( Real Madrid’s league) titles, 18 Copa del Rays ( annual tournament for all Spanish teams), 8 Spanish Super Cups ( a match between the winners of La Liga and Copa del Ray), 9 UEFA Champions league titles ( An annual tournament raised by UEFA, UEFA is Union of European Football Associations ), 2UEFA Cups and 1 UEFA Super Cup.

Real Madrid’s stadium is called Santiago Bernabeu. It can hold up to 85,454 rabid fans. It’s the fifth largest stadium in the world. Santiago Bernabeu has been Real Madrid’s stadium since 1947. The ancient stadium has hosted the 1982 World Cup Final plus many other huge soccer events. Like all sports teams there is a rivalry between two teams. It is classic and it is inevitable, every team has a rival. However, no rivalry in history compares to Real Madrid’s and FC Barcelona’s rivalry. Some claim that it is the oldest rivalry in sports. An author says that it is a reenactment of the Spanish Civil War. FC Barcelona also has a rich history of greatness. Every Real Madrid fan hates Barcelona and every Barcelona fan hates Real Madrid. I personally have been to Spain and have seen with my own eyes the majestic Santiago Bernabeu.

Blogging Challenge Week – Holiday by Grace

No School!
During the snow storm, while most of Poughkeepsie had no power I did. We got about five inches of snow which was fun on the day it fell. My brother and I went sledding which I enjoyed. The next day however I had no fun at all. We tried to go sledding but the snow wasn’t firm any more. Throughout the day the sun came out and all the snow melted. My grandfather and aunt who live in California came to our house for two weeks. While the power was out at our school I got to spend a little bit more time with them and  make cookies for them.

Halloween was also very fun. Cally and I went around Woodstock to every store and house there. We didn’t get so much candy but getting candy wasn’t the real reason that we had come to Woodstock. At about seven o’clock we went to Cally’s mom and got a bottle of shaving cream each, then headed for the center of Woodstock where random kids ran around town with all the other six, seven and eighth graders spraying each other with shaving cream. Most kids in Woodstock have a shaving cream fight every year.

Cally and I stayed at the fight for about two hours then went back to C.P.W which is one of the places Cally’s parents work. We waited out side while Cally’s dad (Phil) went to get our candy inside. People started taking pictures of us because we were so covered in shaving cream that our whole body was completely white. A few days later I realized I was on the cover of the Woodstock newspaper covered in shaving cream. After he came out we walked to the car. Before we got in, Phil had to cover the seats with garbage bags and give us a towel to wipe some of the shaving cream off with. The car ride was uncomfortable but when I got home I took shower and went to bed. It had been a very exhausting night. I was very surprised to here from my mom that our school still had no power! I still had power. I had nothing to do but sit around and wait. The only problem with that was I had no idea what I was waiting for.  After an hour of reading and doing homework, I finally went into the kitchen for lunch.

On Wednesday morning my aunt and grandfather left to go back to California. I was sad that they were leaving but my aunt had to get back to her farm, and my grandfather just wanted to go back to his home. In the afternoon I didn’t really do anything except for doing homework and reading. Later that night I got ready for bed late, thinking that Thursday would just be another day without any school, and was prepared to go on Edmodo (which is an online website to talk with everyone in your group) and have humanities online. I went into my mom’s office and said goodnight to her and she told me that tomorrow we would have school and it would be a G day which is one of the letter days in our schedule. I was exited to finally go to school after such a long weekend but at the same time I was sad to finish relaxing at home and go back and do work. I went back to my room and saw all the classes I had on G day, then got my bag ready so I wouldn’t be unprepared in the morning. I woke up in the morning tired because I went to sleep late. I got ready and went down stairs to eat breakfast. I was happy to finally go back to school from such a long weekend.
My five day weekend was overall very fun.

No school in the big snow storm

What I did on the 5 day weekend Challenge
On the weekend with no power, I was forced to not use electronics so since I’m learning guitar I practiced for hours on end. I learned how to play Psalm 100 and The Saints Go Marching In. I worked on Aura Lee too. I got to perfect the rifts from Forget You, Smoke on the Water and Peter Gun. I played my guitar in candle light when we didn’t have power. I got really good and now I can play them all almost flawlessly.

When the snow hit, I thought it was awesome then when the power went out I didn’t think it was that awesome. I went to a Halloween party when the snow was coming down and the snow was so heavy and wet that when my mom and I got to the host’s driveway we couldn’t get up the driveway. We had to stay only a hour or less because of the snow and we had to park in the train station adjacent to their house. I still loved the snow so ,I went out there in the snow and built a snow man. He had grass hair stick arms leaf eyes stick mouth and a staff that he held. He is still there in my back yard staring into the distance.

On Monday, Lukas, his sister Riley and I went trick or treating around Lukas’s development. I was an orc  – a green humanoid creature that is blood thirsty. Lukas was the grim reaper and Riley was a princess. We walked around Lukas’s development cutting across lawns to get to the next house. When we got back to Lukas’s house we sorted out our candy and played a little xbox.

To cope with the power outage, my parents and I heated our house with our wood burning stove and lit candles when it got dark. I had to read 14 pages of my science text book in candle light. Let me tell you it wasn’t a piece of cake. When our power came back on our internet was still out. At least I got to use my wii, I learned how to play wii basketball and  I’m not that bad at it either.
