Yasmeen – Nature’s Classroom

Something that I really enjoyed was the food at Nature’s Classroom. Not only is their food really good but they have options for people who can’t eat pork (like me), or meat, etc. They have a great salad bar and their veggies were so crisp and fresh because they were picked fresh from the farm. My favorite meal that I had was the pasta and garlic bread. I liked how for breakfast you could have white milk,or juice. For lunch you aren’t allowed to have milk just water, and for dinner there was chocolate milk.

One of my favorite things that we did in Nature’s classroom would have to be Wednesday Night Live. I liked how I could express myself with my group anyway I want to. I thought the skit my group did was really funny. I got to be one of the main characters which was really fun.I also really enjoyed the teachers skit and how they pretend to be us. I had a lot of laughs and giggles on Wednesday Night Live.
My other favorite thing about Nature’s Classroom is when we went on the hike. I like this part because we went through some ups and downs, but we still had fun. One memory I will never forget about this hike is when Caidin fell into the stream, and when I was helping Milaura up a mountain of snow. My field group leader was Nicky D and he really showed me how to embrace nature. Overall, Nature’s classroom was a great experience and I can’t wait for next year!

Blogging Challenge Week # 5 Nutella By Olive

Nutella is a delicious chocolate hazelnut spread that people love!

Nutella was created back in 1806, when Napoleon tried to freeze out British commerce as a means to win the Napoleonic wars (and take over the world). The result was a disastrous and caused the cost of chocolate to skyrocket and left Piedmontese chocolatiers  in the lurch. Ever resourceful, chocolatiers in Turin started adding chopped hazelnuts to chocolate to stretch the supply as much as Possible . The ensuing deliciousness was a fateful paste dubbed “gianduia.”

Over a century later, chocolate again became expensive and scarce due to rationing in Europe during World War II. An Italian pastry maker named Pietro Ferrero once again turned to the mighty hazelnut for salvation in 1946 and created Pasta Gianduja, renamed “Nutella” in 1964.

This food is so good because it’s fresh and its man  made. The people from Singapore help out to. They have workers make them and they put them out on the market. The types of food they have is Pasta, Tuscan Tomato, Stovetop Mac and Cheese and the finale is the Beef Rending.  This is the other website I used for all the other facts I got:

Blogging Challenge Week #5 Activity #1

When my family has dinner, it is a little different than regular American food. On special occasions my mom makes Dominican food. We make empanadas, rice and gondolas and carne guisada (beef stew). I think that empanadas are my favorite. They are filled with beef and wrapped with a dough. It takes a lot of concentration to make these. Mostly because you have to season the meat and watch how long it cooks. Also the dough that we use is very fragile so you have to be careful when wrapping the beef in the dough.

Then we have my grandmother. She is Italian and makes Italian food all the time. My favorite is her pasta with meat sauce. When I watch her cook it I get bored because it takes so long to make. But I know that’s it’s worth waiting because it’s so good! My Grandmother uses a secret recipe that has been pasted down from her mother.  But in the end I love both foods!

Week 5 Blogging Challenge

This graph, created by the Economic Research Council, was found through a link to Time Magazine.  The graph shows  changes over time in the main foods that Americans eat.  I noticed that Americans eat  more corn sweetener and it looks consumption ( eating ) of sugars went down for a while and now it seems to be coming back up. I also noticed that there is a lot of artificial sugars being eaten. If you want to learn more you can click here.

Week#5 Activity#1 -Doughnuts

There are tons of doughnuts here in the USA but this was the first one: Glazed. A sweet sugary doughnut that makes your mouth water. It was first invented when Elizabeth Gregory, who was a captain’s mother made a deep-fry dough with walnuts and almonds in the middle so that he could eat it with his crew so that they wouldn’t get scurvy. When Elizabeth made it it wasn’t called a doughnut. The name doughnut came much later when in World War I Doughboys used to sell doughnuts and got the name from DOUGH-boys back then doughnuts had nuts in the middle. Doughboys stuck holes in the middle where the nuts were so that soldiers were able to hold it better.

Even though I have no connection to Japan I LOVE Sushi. Sushi originally comes from Japan. Some people think that sushi is fish and seaweed and rice all wrapped up, but really it’s not. Sushi is actually a slice of fish and rice. No avocado no seaweed. Wait never mind it does sometimes have seaweed and other foods but you won’t see that much of it in Japan. Nare Zushi was the original type of sushi. It was first made in South East Asia. Some people think it was first made along the Mekong River. Sushi actually means “Sour Tasting” I hope you enjoyed my brief little History lesson on Sushi.

Hamburgers have always been very popular here in New York! Of course you can probably find hamburgers anywhere else in the world, but I think New York sells a lot of them every year. Two places that have become very popular serving burgers are McDonald’s and Burger King. Two of the most known fast food places. Most likely almost everyone who reads this post has heard of them.

Burgers are sometimes served with Cheese (adding cheese makes the hamburger a cheeseburger), lettuce, tomato and if you like them, onions. The most common side you can get with the burger is french fries. If you would like to see more about the history of burgers and more click here.

Some ways you can make burgers are better than others. If you have never had a burger (Which most people have), I’d recommend going to a place that serves really good ones. You always want a good first taste!

Blogging Challenge Week #5 Activity #1

My family  is from a country called Pakistan ( except we  live in America). In Pakistan we eat a lot of different foods that are all very spicy because we like to eat spicy food. (My grandma is from there and makes Pakistani food). The food we eat is very similar to indian food. Anyway, some things that we eat are,  Naan or  roti , which is a type of bread. Naan is more  soft and fluffy while roti is more dry.(I like naan better). We eat this with chicken or Kebab ( which is basically meat either round or long). They taste like  meat with a lot of spice ( but it usually depends on how the person makes it. I personally like both,( I’m a meat eater). We also eat brown rice or white rice with chicken or lamb.  Chicken from my country is spicy ,and very delicious. I don’t really like lamb though. For dessert we have a lot of things. I don’t really like Pakistani desserts that much but a lot of people do. Anyway, the things that are mostly popular , are Gulab Jamaan which are  milky balls dipped into syrup. We also eat Kulfi which is dessert based on milk. Ras Malai which is also based off of milk but is more liquidy. Barfi which comes in square shape. All of these desserts mostly taste sweet. Anyway, these are just some of the things we eat  from Pakistan.

Here is the link to where I got all my information.

A food that the United States is famous for is it’s Buffalo wings. These (surprisingly) un-breaded spicy or mild delights are made from a portion of a chicken’s wing which is deep fried and coated with Cayenne pepper hot sauce and a little butter. These are often served with celery and bleu cheese.

Buffalo wings were first invented by Teressa Bellissimo (who owned a bar with her husband Frank). “Upon the unannounced, late-night arrival of their son, Dominic, with several of his friends from college, Teressa needed a fast and easy snack to present to her guests. It was then that she came up with the idea of deep frying chicken wings (normally thrown away or reserved for stock) and tossing them in cayenne hot sauce.”  Lots of stories like those have circulated around the world and it’s hard to know which story is true. But that doesn’t matter. What does matter is that those wings taste good!
