STUDENT LED CONFERENCE – MANNY

Student Led Conference Presentations

A Student Led Conference is basically the same thing as a parent teacher conference except it is led by the student. We did it differently than we normally do it this year. This year we made presentations to go along with our conference. I had fun creating my presentation and I am proud of my work. I think students leading a conference is a good idea because it prepares everyone for real life and doing business. It was really exciting and a great experience for me.

To prepare for my SLC, I first had to plan out my presentation. We all (6th grade) got layout slides so we had something to work off of. That made the whole process of the presentation way easier. I filled in all the criteria in the slideshow, and I also needed to find out if I needed any pieces of paper or need to print stuff out for my slideshow. When I printed, I was ready to rehearse. It took some time until I was ready to put it all together and show my parents.

My experience with this was all very positive and exciting. I always over think this every year but then it turns out to be all fine. I am usually intimidated and kind of frightened but my SLC always turns out okay. I had a great time with my dad for my SLC and hope I do not over think it next year. One of my goals was to jog every other day and I have not really been doing that because of my spring allergies. I really want to because, since I have asthma it is hard for me to run and jog. I think doing this will build up my endurance. Overall, I had a great Student Led Conference!

Poem, Times Square By Manny

Everywhere I look there are flashing lights
Vibrant colors filling my eyes
The shimmering buildings, gloomy at night
Until the next morn when the sun shall rise.

The hustle of the city
The taste of the hot dogs
It would be very pretty
If no one got robbed.

The pigeons are chirping
An annoying sound
They are busily working
So plump and round.

The wheezing breath
The misty gloom
Brings the sound of death
Into the room.

Pandora’s Lair

With Coraline and Tintin pictures

Introduction

“John do you see that? The glowing orb in the center?” Mary said.
Slowly she crept into the hole and submerged into the golden light.
All of a sudden I heard a voice that sounded like Mary’s, scream out in pain. Then with a thud, something fell to the cold, hard floor.
“Yes! The treasure of Pandora is all mine! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” said a voice coming from the golden glow.
“What is that?” I replied
“Mary? Mary! AHHHHHHHHH!”

“It has been three weeks since Mary, my partner investigator, had disappeared. I had been searching for her ever since her mysterious disappearance into that dark hole. I spent most of that time looking for countless hours at the hole where she last was standing. The hole that we were observing was called Pandora’s Lair. Legend has it that Pandora the great Greek hero, actually put all of her wealth into a hole and hid it from everybody.

Then one day while I was observing, a sharp pain landed in my back. It did not feel like a knife, but a needle.

When I woke back up I was in a dungeon. On the outside there was someone who had a Mexican wrestling mask on and was in a suit. He said, “We’ve been waiting for you to wake up John.”
“How do you know my name?” I said with a quivering voice.
“We’ve been watching you for many years now. Learning your weaknesses. Like one of them is her!”
Two of his thugs pulled out a beaten up woman and when I looked closer at her face, I saw who it was. It was Mary!

“What did you do to her!” I said both angry and sad.
“We just reasoned with her and had some fun,” he said with a smirk and a chuckle.
All of a sudden my vision went groggy. A hand grasped my shoulder and injected me with a green liquid.

My Christmas and New Years Traditions – Manny C.

I celebrate Christmas on the 24th instead of the 25th. The reason for that is because my mom is Danish and that’s the way she has always done it.
On Christmas Eve my family and I get up early in the morning and start cooking the dinner. We usually have 2 ducks, mashed sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, broccoli and oven roasted potatoes. I help my mom prepare it all and then since my sister and I get to open one present in the morning, we do. Then the whole day my sister and I spend using whatever we got.At around 3 o’clock my Grandmother comes over. We call her Mormor because that’s Danish for mother’s mom. (Now that she has a house near us she doesn’t have to fly in from Denmark). If she was still living in Denmark she would have to fly over on the 19th or someday near that and stay with us. The only thing I miss about Mormor coming is she always brought Danish candy that you can’t get here 🙁 . When Mormor comes over on Christmas Eve she brings the rice pudding which I will explain later on. She stays with us and just helps my mom with the last of the cooking.

7 or 8 is when we start eating the feast that was hard to prepare, but even harder to eat! There is always so much food and only 5 people. We always have leftovers for other days. After my sister and I are done we have to wait until the parents are done eating. For dessert we have rice pudding w/ almonds, and a cake. Once my whole family is done eating my mom gets out her fancy 100 year old glasses that she keeps in a cabinet in our living room and pours in some rice pudding. We have an exciting way of eating this.

At first when the rice pudding is done my parents and Mormor put some peeled, chopped up almonds into a big pot with all the rice pudding. There is one whole peeled almond and it is dropped into the pot. They then stir it all up. My parents serve it to us in those glasses and tell us the rules. You eat and look through your cup of rice pudding to try and find the one whole almond. If you find it then you get the amazing marzipan pig that my sister and I sculpted.

After we see who got the almond and they claim their prize, it’s time to open presents! We do this like presenting the present to that person. My sister and I spend the whole night using and playing with our presents.

My Christmas Eve 2011

This year my Christmas Eve could have been better.

On Christmas Eve in the morning I, as usual, helped my mom with the dishes and preparing the ducks with my sister. When we finished the ducks my sister went to go outside and found a present in our storm door. We opened it and found out it was “Just Dance 2 Wii”. We thanked our Mom and Dad and went right to playing it.

My sister and I basically played it for the whole day and then we stopped at around 3 to watch The Nutcracker and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer as a tradition. Mormor watched us play the Just Dance game again until 5 so she and my sister helped my mom. My dad and I watched the Lord of the Rings all 3 movies on 6 discs and they were great. We didn’t watch them all on Christmas just the last disc to the last movie, The Return of the King.

At around 6 we had to eat because, this is why my Christmas wasn’t so good, my Dad had to work. He had a concert scheduled for Christmas and I was really bummed. He stayed only to eat and then he left 🙁 . I opened my presents and I was really happy that I got Dre Beats Solo HD (which are headphones designed by Dre) from my dad. I also got shoes and clothes. My dad gave me a crash ride cymbal and I freaked out! I played it so much that my sister almost shoved my drumstick down my throat. That night I was so happy.

My New Years 2011 – 2012

In about a week it was New Years and again, my dad had to work 🙁 . I was really mad and sad so I just hung out until 12 with my mom, sister and Mormor watching movies and eating cake. I guess it could’ve been more exciting but it was okay. I also read my book that I started called, “The Misfits by James Howe”. It is a really good book and I like it very much.

100 Word Challenge – Manny “Birthday”

Birthday

I opened the door and saw the clown that my Dad had ordered. Today was supposed to be the best day of my life. My birthday!

Once the clown was ready, I started going down my checklist. My Dad still hadn’t come back from his business trip.

At 4:00 my friends came. I saw Maggie, Dean, Joe, wait, where was Herald? Instead of Herald there was an awkward kid with steaming blood red eyes. His name was George and he said he was a friend of Herald’s. Before I could answer, George pulled a toxic gauze over my mouth.

Inkheart Book Talk – Manny

INKHEART

It might sound awesome if your dad can read characters out of a book, but if he gets kidnapped because of that, it’s not so awesome. In the   book Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, 13 year old Meggie is dragged out of bed one morning to go to a lady called Elinor’s house with a guy named Dustfinger who she hasn’t even met before! Her father, Mortimer, is having a book stored for him which, much to Meggie’s disagreement, he is not letting her read before he gives it away. Once at Elinor’s house at night time Meggie finds out her father was just kidnapped right inside the house! Along their journey in the book Meggie meets lots of new friends and companions and finds out some aren’t real… Meggie’s mom disappeared when Meggie was just a little girl. If you think that’s bad, Mortimer read three other characters out from the book Inkheart. Their names were Capricorn, Basta and a little glass man who broke right as he got out. Capricorn and Basta are mass killers and the ones who kidnapped Mortimer earlier. This book will give you an adventure that will blow your mind!

Edublogs Blogging Challenge Week 10 – Manny

Blogging Challenge Week 10

By Manny C.

So far, on my class blog, I have put up 9 posts on my page. Four of those are for the Edublogs Challenge that my class is taking a part in. The other 5 are ones that our teacher, Shirley, had assigned for homework. I wish that Shirley, had let us write maybe 1 or 2 posts about anything we wanted. I have only received 5 comments but replied to 2 so it appears as 7. My mom has put out the link for our school blog and my page on her facebook so I hope to get more comments from around the world. Not one of my posts has gotten a larger number of comments than another but I hope to change that. I only received one comment from a person I didn’t know at the time but I soon found out that Miss W. was the director of the Edublogs Challenge.

My favorite post to write was probably the Week Number 9 challenge because we could write it about anything as long as we included 2 links and 1 picture with a correct attribution. I wrote mine about a person I made up called, “The Adventures of Pepito Corvette. It takes place in Paris but I only wrote the first chapter. It was fun to have to do a little bit of research and still be able to free write.

I have a total of 3 widgets or pictures in all of my posts. Personally I think that I should have more because pictures attract people to read something and then I might get more comments. Also if you don’t know all about the copyright law then it is hard to get pictures and one might get in a lawsuit. Copyright means that you can’t use the picture at all for your personal use unless you get permission from the author. Creative Commons is when if you give a correct attribution then you can use it or make fun of it in anyway. An attribution is when you say this person made it not me and put a link so people can see the real picture.

My class’s blog has only changed themes 1 time since September! Also to make it worse, the background we changed to is not that nice. I think we should change our background about once a month so that it won’t be the same background all the time. Color is also an issue, I would love to have a very bright, light, and colorful theme because light colors are more uplifting than dark colors. The time we changed was during Halloween and I think that is a good choice. If we change during the holidays then we can have an idea of what to change it to. There is a holiday almost every month so that would make it easier.

Last year our visitors were at 3,000 and now they’re at 6,000 and still rising! I think that we could get about 8,000 if we really tried. One idea to help us that I just came up with is maybe if there is a youtube video that we create and film that is really funny, more people will tell their friends to visit it. Our newest visitor was from France and visited on November 27, 2011. The newest country is United Arab Emirates and last visited on November 26, 2011. They keep on changing so it might read differently when you look at it. If you would like to see our visitors click here.

The Adventure of Pepito Corvette

Introduction

Imagine this, a shrill morning in early March, just standing and admiring the view off of the relaxing monument we call the Eiffel Tower. The warm sun beating down on your back making you feel as if you were covered in a cozy blanket. I am an artist named Pepito Corvette. I travel around the world searching for historical and famous artwork for my boss. His name is Fernando and is part of an international trade center that sells famous artwork for money. Oh yeah did I forget to mention illegally!

Chapter 1

Journey to the Eiffel Tower

“On April 16, 1989, I stared out of my hotel window into the distance of the land and breathed in a deep breath of fresh air. Then I set out to find the Mona Lisa at the Louvre that my boss had described to me in detail last night.

He specifically said, “Go in there posing as a tourist, then get all the other tourists and workers there out with your equipped system I have granted you with. Meet our other officer who will be wearing a gas mask and hand him the tracking device. Then sneak over to the painting and cover it with your cloth. Lastly get out as quick as you can. The last thing we need is the cops getting a clue of where we are. Remember, this can be a very dangerous job if you do it wrong.”

Of course there was always a time limit with Fernando, but I was not about to start complaining and blow our 100,000 dollars out the window!

So I pack up all my things, including my cloth, and set out to find the Louvre. You might think,
“Oh, that sounds easy!”
“Well let me assure you, it’s not easy routing your way through Paris when you don’t even speak french. Trying to find the people who speak English is even harder! At last I gave up when I stopped at a small cozy coffee shop called L’Autre Cafe for a drink. The first waiter I had was a real pain in the neck. I kept on asking him, “May I please have the menu or at least a waiter who speaks English!”
The waiter muttered something in french, then walked off into the kitchen. 15 minutes went by until a lady waitress came to my aid.
“I’m sorry for the inconvenience earlier, I am Shayla and I’ll be your waitress today.” She said.
I said, “Thank you but all I want is a espresso and directions to the Louvre.”
Shayla gave me a map and my espresso and I was on my way. I finally found my check point, The Eiffel Tower. As I traveled to the top I noticed someone or something following me.
