Metropolitan Museum of Art trip – By Joe P.

On Thursday, May 5th we went to the Met to learn about Greek art. We left at 7:45 in the morning and got there at about 10:00. We split up into two groups and then we went to take a tour about Greek art.

We started off by looking at some sculptures which I found very interesting. Our guide explained a lot about the art and she really new what she was talking about. Usually tours are very boring and they always go overboard on information but this guide didn’t. We had seen pictures and information on the art that the tour guide showed us but it was so much cooler to see it in real life.

The tour guide only showed us a couple works of art which was nice. The tours I’ve been on would be very long and boring but this tour was only a couple pieces of art and a lot of information. It was a very pleasant tour. After the tour we ate lunch and played in Central Park. It was so beautiful out and we spent a lot of time there. After that we had a scavenger hunt!

We split up into three tiny groups and went off looking for art. We were giving a packet by our teacher to fill out by looking for art. A kid named Matt was my partner and we went off looking to the answers of the questions on the packet. We were the first ones to finish and we explained a lot to the group. After the scavenger hunt, we went to the gift shop and looked around for a little bit but then we just packed up and went back to school. I was very tired at the end of the day and I felt like I learned a lot. It was a fun day!!

Student Led Conference By Joe

On the 28th of April, I had a Student Led Conference. A student led conference is a conference led by you, the student. A SLC is a great way for you to talk and show your work you have been doing all year long.  It is a way that allows your parents to feel very fortunate for sending you to school. Student led conferences happen in middle school not lower school.

To prepare for these conferences you have to do a couple steps. The first thing is the teachers give you a couple of forms and self assessments to fill out. After you’re done doing that you gather two pieces of work from each subject you learn from. One piece of work has to be challenging work and the other great work. After this you put it into a filing folder and you are ready to go. I found the preparation a little challenging because of time issue. I had two other reports going on at this time and extra homework. I managed to get it in at the right time but it was stressful. In our class we worked on it for about two weeks. We only had advisory times so again a time issue!

After preparation came the presentation (conference). I had done this a year ago and I found it rather easy. This year my conference went well. I talked for a long time on each subject and gave good suggestions, comments and Ideas. I was not scared at all and in the end my teacher and mom and I came up with good goals and I had a very nice conference.

I learned some different things that I struggle at this year that I did not know about. Coming from a teacher’s point of view there are many more things that they notice!! I was very pleased with myself and I noticed that I am very good at leading conferences!! 🙂

Florida By Joe P.

Instead of going on the Nature’s Classroom trip, I went to Florida to visit my grandma and hang out…..

The clock said 4:30 AM an hour before I was about to leave. I was heading off to Florida for a week! I woke up to the shower running which meant my dad was in there. I scurried downstairs and ate while watching Sportscenter. After 30 minutes passed my mom woke up and came went downstairs to give me my medicine for the plane. Another 30 minutes passed and I was off headed to Stewart airport. We got there and I said goodbye to my mom. Then we checked into the airport along with our bags. Moments later I was headed on to the plane. We sat in the upgraded seats so it was very comfy. I had two flights to take. I was on the flight to Atlanta and then we had a lay over for about two hours. After that we were headed to West Palm beach. It took us about 4 hours to get to West Palm. When we got there my dad and I got out of the plane and went to the pick up zone where are bags were. We picked them up and then waited for my Uncle to pick us up. My uncle finally came and then we got into his car.

When we were driving I looked outside my window. It was sunny and there were palm trees all around. The roads were very open and they were almost white. Nice cars kept on passing us like Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s and lots more. When we got to the development that my grandma lived in, I almost flipped out on how nice it was. There was beautiful scenery and huge houses. When we got to my Grandma’s street my dad told me that she had the nicest house and trust me, it was nice. More important is that I was so happy to see my grandma. I call my grandma Baba. After we said hello we got are luggage and unpacked. After we got cozy we went to the pool. The pool was so nice and warm and very refreshing. I was so happy to be in Florida!!!

After swimming we came home and went out for dinner. The dinner was Italian and Italian is one of my main dishes so I loved it. After dinner I was very tired so I went to bed. The very next day my dad and I played golf.

I first have to say that my dad and I are golf fanatics and we love the sport so all week we played golf. We wound up playing 8 rounds of golf and my dad and I played very well. My best game was when I shot a 44 on the front and on the back I shot a 47 so I was very proud of myself. We played a couple of different golf courses; Westchester course, Palm Air, Palm Beach National, Boyton Municipal I think, and I can’t remember the other one. After playing golf for 7 days straight my muscles got tight and I got really tired. That’s what happened to me but golf is addicting so au never want to stop. That is one of the activities I did this week.

Something bad happened to me during this vacation though…

I got a rash from being in the sun too much. It was really itchy and it was all over my body. My dad and my grandma thought it was prickly heat and so they got me Benedryl and aloe. After a few days it went away and I was happy but it was really itchy for those days. Throughout my vacation I golfed and swam and ate and just relaxed. Although I did something that was very cool. I went to a boat show…

In the boat show there were really nice Yachts and speedboats. It was really cool to go inside the big Yachts and look around. They were like small houses. My dad and I found a really nice Yacht that we were looking to buy for the Hudson River and other places. I am really happy. We also looked at some speedboats which was very cool. I have a speed boat at my lake just like them..

On Sunday morning I woke up and turned the television on and watched sports. After that I started to pack as this was the morning of when we were leaving. After I was done packing I cam into the kitchen and ate. The biscuits were warm and toasty and they were so good. After I ate I put my luggage into the car andmy dad and my grandma and I drove to the airport. I was so sad and disappointed to leave but I was excited to see my friends and family. When we got to the airport I said goodbye to my grandma and checked in. An hour or so passed and then the next thing I know I’m on the plane to Atlanta and then to New york…. This was a fun trip!! 🙂

Imagination day By Joe P.

In school we tried this activity called Imagination day. This day was when kids could choose if they wanted to teach students or not. If they did teach then we they could bring their activity to a class that was assigned for them and they teach them. If we didn’t want to teach then we could sign up for one of the other student classes. There were two activities in this day. It was where we students, could teach other students. I wanted to teach basketball.

I had eight kids in my class and it was a great amount of kids for basketball. I started out with the kids doing some stretching and getting warmed up. Then we did a scrimmage. While doing the scrimmage I taught them how to work as a team and pass, shoot and dribble. It was very fun and everybody enjoyed it. After this I had snack and then went to a class that was about World War II. I enjoyed this class and I thought that the student teacher had a lot of information, which was great. I never got bored! He really knew his history.

This day turned out to be great and I would love to do it again. If we were to do it again I would teach my kids some skills and play a better game. I loved Imagination Day!!! 🙂

Vassar College: Marco Polo By Joe P.

Hi Denis:

Yesterday you came to us in Vassar College and spoke the words of Marco Polo. You told us all about Marco polo and your own accomplishments. We were very fascinated by your knowledge and your studies and still are. We were intrigued by the fact that you accomplished such a hard travel. To think that you actually walked on a path where Marco Polo’s footsteps had once been. It was very exciting to hear about your journey and what you did from doing illegal things to eating strange foods. It was very cool to see the documentaries of your journey and your videos.

Your movie was rated five stars and I thought that was very cool! I thought that your three year journey was very interesting. It sounded like a lot of fun and your speech was very enjoying. I liked how you talked to the third graders. Overall I thought it was an very interesting journey and I love your stories! 🙂

My Skiing Life By Joe P.

Skiing is one of the most exciting, coolest, most fun sports in the world to do. I happen to do this sport. I have been skiing for the past 9 years or so and I simply love it. I started out with my dad training me how to ski. I never went to a ski school and because of my dad and myself, I can now ski almost anything. I love to ski! My dad and I go skiing almost every weekend. Sometimes my family and I go to Vermont and go on ski trips. It’s really fun because there is a lot to ski out there. Skiing take lots of practice so I had to learn from the best.

My skiing life started out on a harness with my dad behind, practicing my skiing at Holiday Mtn.! My dad was a trainer when he was young but now he just skies really well. People think it is kind of weird to be on a harness but that’s how you learn at two years old. Anyway, the following year I came off of the harness and skied with my dad side by side. For some time I really just snow plowed my way down the hill but then I got into the routine of skiing. Sooner or later I was rocking the hills.

Age 11. It’s the year 2011 and I am now skiing exceptionally well. I love skiing and I always try my best. If you are reading this documentary now remember the name of Joe Pullman! You never know you could see me in the Olympics!!! 🙂

What makes a great student? By Joe P.

I am a student just like all the other children in my school.  Many people think that being a great student is behaving well and listening and paying attention. Yes these are some tasks that students have to follow but it’s not that teachers can control children to behave perfect. Not all students are perfect. Lots of kids have their ups and down if it’s paying attention or being a distraction. I know I sometimes get distracted but I’m pretty sure most kids do now and then. A student is not about being normal or it’s not about being perfect, it’s about children being themselves. Students also have to be happy and have a great attitude. A great student is a person whot is very interested in learning and being themselves, knowing that they can be a great student.

What makes a great teacher? By Joe P.

It is challenging for some people to be good teachers and for others it is not. Kids want a teacher who will be your friend and be nice. A teacher is someone who people can trust and be happy with. This teacher has to be the best teacher and always find fun stuff to do in class. This teacher has to have jokes and always be on the kids’ side not the teacher’s side. A great teacher is someone who is interested and listens to what we have to say. A great teacher will teach kids and then after maybe play fun games. Great teachers should be themselves with a hint of a great smile. A teacher can be great but at some point the teacher will have to be a little strict and get to work. That’s what teaching is all about right? That is teaching the kids and giving them the best education they can. Some kids think that teachers are strict and mean but that’s not always their fault. It’s the kids fault, us the kids who get them angry. It is not that simple to be a great teacher, but try hard and the teachers will find that kids will love them. A great teacher is always a great teacher and people will remember that! 🙂

Favorite web 2.0 tool By Joe P.

My favorite 2.0 tool this year was the blog. The blog allows my class to share our work with the whole world. I picked this as my favorite one because it has so many tools and convenient things. There is always something you can change. When you keep updating your blog, you will find that lots of people view it and comment on other posts. My class enjoys this very much because we realize and learn so many things about blogging and technology. With this blog it is also a way to save paper. Instead of maybe putting your writing in the newspapers or journals you can just look at a blog. I look at this blog as an opportunity for people to find out about my writing. I think maybe you can become writers from blogs! There is so much on blogging and this is why it is my favorite 2.0 tool!! 🙂

Edgar Allan Poe By Joe

Edgar Allan Poe Activity

Poe was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts and he died on October 7th 1849, in a Baltimore hospital. Poe lived for a long and stressful life for forty years having problems and accomplishing different things. Poe’s parents were named David and Elizabeth. He had two siblings, Henry and Rosalie, but unfortunately they had to be separated when Edgar was two. Poe’s parents split up and shortly after that Poe’s mother died. Poe was sent to live with Mrs. and Mr. John Allan, a well off high classed family. Poe went to good schools. He learned Latin and French, math and history in school. He  was a very bright student. When he was about 17 he went to the University of Virginia and did well there. However all his life he had drinking problems and was expelled from school a year early. After this he went to join the US army and did well. Then he wanted to go to West Point and he got in but only stayed there for a short amount of time. After his army experience he went to New York City to start writing poems and stories. He married cousin, Virginia who was many years younger than him. He had a rough start with his writing. Journals, story writers and poem editors soon found out about him and he was writing articles and journal entries and poems for newspapers and other publications. He loved writing poems so he became a poetry writer and he wrote fantastic poems. Most of them were very dark. Here a some great ones: The Raven, The Tale Tell Heart, The Haunted Palace and he wrote lots more!  His wife Virginia died and he was very depressed. At the end of his life he traveled a lot and visited friends and then he passed away. Poe’s death was mysterious and no one knows how or why he died. One of the big questions in his life was how he was a great writer in Horror stories!

Poe is one of the most popular horror story writers in America. This is because he writes his poems and stories with great vocabulary and grammar and content. His stories are so good because they give you a picture and keep you intrigued. Most of his poems/stories are morbid and I think that may be because he lived a very sad life and when he writes he expresses his feelings. One of my favorite poems is by Poe and it’s called The Tale Tell Heart written in a first person narrative. This poem is about a man who hates an old man’s eye and thinks it’s evil. The man who hates the evil eye is crazy and wants to kill the old man so he never has to look at that evil eye again. Throughout the story he waits until the right moment and kills the old man. Poe’s stories are very simple but the language is expressive. Poe’s writing in this story makes me feel a little disturbed and a little sad but at the same time very interested. Some of my favorite parts in the story show that he is a great writer.

Here is an example of a simple paragraph that gives the reader a good idea of what the story is about. From this paragraph the reader can understand that the narrator is crazy.
– from http://poestories.com

“It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture –a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees — very gradually –I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.”

This paragraph describes the narrator’s final night and the intensity of waiting for the right time to kill the old man.

“Upon the eight night I was more than usually cautious in opening the door.  A watche’s minute hand more quickly than did mine. Never before that night had I felt the extent of my own powers-of may sagacity.  I could scarcely contain my feelings of triumph. To think that there I was, opening the door, little by little, and he not to even dream of my secret deeds or thoughts.  I fairly chuckled at the idea; and perhaps he heard me; for he moved on the bed suddenly, as if startled.  Now you may think that I drew back–but no.  His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the shutters were close fastened, for fear of robbers,) and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing on it steadily, steadily.”

I think Poe is great at writing horror poems/stories. I’ve read many of his stories and my favorite one is The Tell Tale Heart. The background of Poe’s life is chaotic and it’s astonishing to read well written stories by him because he had a difficult life. I don’t think Poe is someone to look up to as a person but as a writer I think he is very talented. I like his writing because it is gloomy.

The title of The Tell Tale Heart is appropriate because at the end of the story you understand what the title means. I get from the title a feeling of karma because a heart can tell on you in many different ways. In this story, the heart tells on the killer.  At the end of the story the killer becomes worried that the cops will find out about the dead old man and he starts thinking that the dead man’s heart is alive. The killer becomes psychotic  because he hears the heart beating and his guilt forces him to show the cops the dead man.

I think Poe gets his plots and characters from his life. This is because all of his stories are sad and his life was sad, dealing with family issues, his alcoholism, and his difficulty keeping a job. He was orphaned and then adopted so maybe in some of his stories he uses his past. Poe was a successful writer and this is because his writing is very detailed and suspenseful. Since it is written for adults the grammar can seem complicated at times for a young reader. Once the young reader understands the story he/she will realize how good Poe’s writing is. Because he writes in an old fashioned way it can be difficult to understand the story. That’s part of the fun for me to figure out what it really means. I also think he was successful because most of his stories were horror and he was especially good at that.  Poe is a great writer and I would like to read more of his stories to learn his writing style and just for fun!

I think Poe will be remembered  for a long time! Unfortunately he had a tragic life and died at an early age but he was a gift from God! He will always be someone to look up to as a horror story writer!
