Imagination Day By Colin

Our school had an Imagination Day. An Imagination Day is where students teach classes on what they like. It was extremely fun and I learned some really cool things. The classes I took were Rise and fall of the Roman Empire, and devil sticking. In rise and fall I learned about the Roman emperors and how the empire came to be. I also learned that a crazy emperor (Caligula) made his horse a senator. In devil sticking I learned the basics of the sport and how extremely hard it is. I learned a lot more in The Roman Empire but devil sticking was active and also really fun. Overall, I think it was a great idea and hop that we can do it again. (Special thanks to Milo, John, and Eli, my teachers).

I think the Greeks are extremely important in human history. Without the Greeks many inventions would not exist. The Romans copied almost all of the Greek way of life religiously and they also copied many of the Greeks technologies, including ship building. Without the Roman Empire the world might still be a little barbaric, as it was back then. The entire human race would probably not be as civilized. There are also many Greek tales that still fascinate us today like the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Today one of the Greek myths that I know has been proved plausible, and that is the siege of Troy. The siege of Troy was made plausible when Heinrich Schliemann found Troy. The other tales like the labors of Heracles and all of the other Greek myths still are just myths, no one knows if they are true. The point being, that without the Greeks the world would be very different from what it’s like today. In all of the myths magnificent cities are described, like Athens, Sparta and Mycenae. It was these thing that have encouraged people to go and search for the Greek cities that have been lost by time.

Denis By Colin

Hello Denis,
My name is Colin. I was one of the students at your presentation at Vassar College. I loved watching the movie again and I think it was a very interesting presentation. All of the questions that you answered made me understand your movie a lot more. We bought your book and it has a ton of great pictures. I think that it is great that you’ve done so much for human history and you’ve proved that it is possible to make the journey. Also the Camel thing made me laugh really hard.

What Makes A Great Teacher? By Colin

A great teacher should be nice but strict enough to keep order in the classroom. They should have a sense of humor and be able to cover the curriculum without over loading their students with work. They should also try to make the class fun instead of having there students sit at a desk all day getting lectured. A great teacher should also have a lot of fun projects planned for the year. A teacher should try not to give a ton of home work and instead be extra productive in class. A great teacher of course has to know the material you are teaching and be organized, (have a plan for each class).

My favorite Web 2.0 Tool by Colin

My favorite web 2.0 tool is Edmodo. I like Edmodo because I feel like you have more freedom to write. In a blog you have to get everything approved and edited before you can post. In Edmodo you can write and post in a few seconds and it is also easier to communicate with classmates. I think that it will work very well for snow days and if you are sick.

Win! Win! Win! By Colin

I chose to write about, ‘What difference has blogging made to your life at school and home?” This is for The Edublogger’s Share Your Blogging Experience
Blogging has made a huge difference in my school and home life. Usually in class we would be writing things on Microsoft word and saving it on a flash drive. Now in class we just post everything on our class blog. When it’s on our blog we can always look at it because it’s on the internet. At home I can look over all of my writing and edit. Parents and other people can also look at what you have been writing in class. Blogging has made homework and school work a lot easier, and I think blogs are a great thing to use in class.

Using Pictures on Blog Posts by Colin

Pictures

Putting pictures on blogs is a great way to add more meaning to your post. Adding pictures also just makes the post more interesting and fun to look at. Once you are finished with you post, you can insert a picture by clicking the picture button where it says add media.

However, when you are putting the picture on your blog, you first have to make sure it isn’t copyrighted (which means you cannot use or reproduce it.) Once you have a picture that isn’t copyrighted you can copy and paste it on to you post. There are certain sites where you can get pictures that aren’t protected by copyright. Creative Commons and flickr CC are great ways to get pictures that aren’t copyrighted.

I got this picture from flickrCC

The Middle Ages By Colin

What We Did in School Last Year

Last year we studied the Middle Ages. It was a lot of fun and we learned about a lot of cool stuff. We studied castles, the crusades, religion, and culture. We didn’t only study Europe but all of the Islamic world and a bit about the Chinese. This year however we are studying Ancient Greece.
I thought that castles were very interesting. They were a lot more complex than you would normally think. If a castle was laid under siege the castle would have to have a source of water in it (such as a stream or well) and have a source of food inside the castle walls ( a field or a very large storage of food that won’t go bad quickly ). A castle would also have defences like moats, archers, gate houses, and soldiers.
I also thought that the crusades were very interesting. The crusades showed the Europeans feelings for the Muslims. When we studied the crusades we also learned why the city was important for both religions. When the Europeans traveled to the Middle East they found things that they had never seen before. There were vast amounts of gold and valuables as well as spice which most crusaders didn’t know existed. Overall, I think last year was very fun and interesting.

Ramapo Letter

Dear Bekah,

I really enjoyed our school’s trip to Ramapo. We did a lot of fun things. The low ropes courses were really good this year as well as the high ropes. I liked the low ropes course where we had to get into a certain order on a log. I also liked when we did a low ropes course were we had to get onto wooden blocks using a rope swing.

I really like the high ropes challenge this year. It was a lot more challenging this year than last year. Last year I did the cargo net challenge witch was a lot easier to complete. This years was a lot harder and we had to work together to complete it. These were really fun challenges and better than last year.

I really wish I could come back next year and I’ve had a really good time there. I’ll miss Ramapo a lot especially the high ropes. Thanks for a great time and I really enjoyed Ramapo this year.

From,

Colin
