Letter to Denis and Francis – by Raiyaan

Dear Denis and Francis,
My name is Raiyaan and I live in Hopewell. My brother, my sister and I all go to Poughkeepsie Day. I watched your video about the Travels of Marco Polo with my class. I laughed at your jokes. They were so funny. I am so inspired by what you did and I am really impressed that you guys never gave up, not even if you were about to be shot.

I can’t believe that you guys sold all your goods just so you could go all across the country. Even though you tried to take Marco Polo’s route, I understand why it was so hard because of the visas and passports. What was going on in your head while you guys were in a shootout? Did you guys think that you were going to die? If I was in your position I wouldn’t have felt so brave as you guys.

My class and I were wondering if you could come and visit our school. If not, could you at least Skype. We are all desperate to see you  guys.
Regards,

Raiyaan

Student led Conference is a time  to show my strengths and weaknesses in my academic classes. It is run mainly by the student but with a little bit of help from the teacher. The conference is thirty minutes long and parents and our advisor attends. In the past, Student led Conferences did not have a presentation with pictures and links, but this year we did. Teachers made us examples of the slides which we then used to help us.

Before the conference day, all the 6th, 7th and 8th grade prepare and get ready. We all worked really hard and made sure that our presentations were perfect. I did practice runs with my friends. I tried to use a lot of time in talking/showing work so that in my presentation there wouldn’t be an awkward silent block at the end. I also tried to not reading off of the board so that it doesn’t look like my back is face to the audience and I’m reading off the board.

I felt really proud after my presentation. I was glad that I didn’t have to work on my presentation anymore. I was also glad to because I got to tell my parents what I was good at and what I was not so good at at. My parents are now helping me a lot in Spanish because that’s the only thing that I have trouble on. My parents are really proud of me and I got a present afterward. My student led conference was exciting.

Observation Poem- Raiyaan

As I sit on my chair, looking out the window
Across my lawn I see the snow
Tell my mom who is making the dinner,
I could see her back go down in shivers,
My sister came to look and yelled “Let it snow!”

Like on cue it stopped,
My sister cried on sadness,
My mom went back to grab a mop,
The sun was now full of brightness,
As my sister sat down and unwrapped a lollipop,
And a tree went branch-less,

The rains had started to come,
But this time my sister didn’t jump up,
Instead she started to hum,
Instead we can hope,
for lots of snow.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind – Raiyaan

The whole entire 6th grade has been reading a book called The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind. This book is about a boy whose name is William Kamkwamba and what he does to save his village. This book is a biography about his life and him telling stories about his father and tales about villages before he was born.I like this book because of the stories and how he exaggerates when his father tells the story, such as his father beating ten police men when he’s drunk. Also I like this book because it starts before his life so the reader has some background images too. I recommend this book to people who are into action history of Africa and to people who like to read biographies.

Picture Challenge – Tunnel – Raiyaan

I grabbed my bag and drove for what seemed like hours. I was headed to the airport to catch my plane. I wanted to relax and take an adventure to an island that was recently discovered and had no particular name yet. Not many people were on the plane. I figured not everyone has heard about this island. I fell asleep…When the plane landed the lights blinded my eyes. It was about seven in the morning. I took a bus to a hotel and unpacked. As I looked out the window I saw the beach on one side and the ocean on the other. I decided to go back to sleep…I woke up at around 2.00 p.m. I had nothing else to do so I took a stroll on the beach. As I was walking I, spotted a hole in the ground. It was hard to tell if it was deep or not because of all the trees. I decided to explore it. I ran back to the hotel, “borrowed” a ladder, took a rope and brought a jacket. I rethought my plan. I was about to enter a cave which could lead to death or make me the greatest explorer ever. I decided to go in.

I entered the cave which was once used for waste in the 1980’s. As I grabbed my ladder and climbed my way down it seemed as if entering a theater. It was pitch black with only a dim of light from above. As I was about to turn on my flashlight I began to hear grumbling and chewing. Since I was the adventurous type of man I didn’t want to miss this moment. I decided to keep my flashlight off and listen. Stupidly I stepped on a leaf and the chewing stopped. I felt my heart beating rapidly. I heard footsteps, and the last thing I saw was a bone being flung at me.

100 Word Challenge by Raiyaan

I opened the door and saw a giant circus jester running in the hall. I screamed in terror and ran downstairs to find something to use as a weapon. Unfortunately the only thing I found was a book and a pan. I ran back upstairs only to find the jester now on my bed. I dropped the pan and book and started thinking of a way not to wake my wife. I decided that if I made a loud scream the jester would run away. It didn’t work.  I quickly carried my wife to the car and drove away.

No School! by Raiyaan

Here’s how my power outage went for three whole days… The first day the power went out we used flashlights as a light source until my dad got the generator running. Once the generator was running we tried to save as much power as we could by unplugging any unnecessary plug-ins. Once that was finished we had dinner, since the stove wasn’t working we had to use the grill. We  cooked some chicken and bread and ate it together. Then we fell asleep.
The Next morning,  my family and I got up, cleared the driveway from the snow, and just sat and talked. Occasionally my little sister and I would go outside and “try” to build a snow man or go sledding. My dad hooked up the generator to the T.V so we could watch since everyone in the house was so bored. We rented a movie called “Zookeeper”.On Halloween nothing really happened since my family doesn’t  celebrate it. We had about two trick or treaters that were out there actually trick or treating. So to pass the time, we just talked and watched T.V.After that my mom and my dad left to get pizza since we couldn’t bake anything. My parents  also went to get some gas for the generator. When they left they didn’t leave the generator on so my little sister, my brother, my grandma and me were all stuck and bored ’till my dad got back. Then when my mom and dad did get back they only put on the generator for the lights since it was night. Then we all went to bed. As soon as I stepped in to my bed the power came on and everyone was so happy. After that all happened I got up and did my H.W at about 11 p.m.

F.D.R. Field trip – by Raiyaan

On Tuesday,. the whole entire sixth grade went to the F.D.R. sight in Hyde Park. I personally really liked It. The reason why I liked the FDR sight was because of the hike. The hike was fun because on the way you get to see many different creatures and bugs. When I was hiking I saw a Red Back salamander, a frog and many earth worms. I recommend this place for people who like to explore. Unfortunately, the only bad thing was the mosquitoes. Thanks to Cathy and Suzanne.

One thing that I want to learn is to be a Mechanic. The reason why I want to learn it, is because I want to be able to know what to do when cars break down, or if a remote control car gets smashed. Maybe when I  get older my hobby will be to fix stuff. I also have this electric toy car and it broke so I would like to fix it. The thing that broke is the axle that holds the wheel in place so instead of riding a four wheeled car I’m riding a three wheel car. One way I think will help me achieve this goal is by working with some small mechanic kits or watch my dad fix stuff.
