SLC – by Zoë

The SLC presentation is a presentation we made to tell our teacher and parents what we did well this year and what we need to work on. The phrase “SLC” stands for student led conference. We started out by writing our thoughts down in a rubric. A rubric is like a graph that has subjects on the side and top and blanks that we filled in. Once we were done with the rubric we made full sentences out of the “notes” we took on the rubric and put it into a Google Presentation. We showed the presentation during our parent teacher conferences.

I prepared for the presentation by thinking about what I did over the school year and then writing the necessary information down on my computer. After all the information was written clearly, I was able to review it and organize it into full sentences to put it on my presentation. I learned that sometimes you just need to write something down and look at it before you write your final draft.

From what I know, SLC pressures almost everyone. It pressured me because I didn’t want to make it seem sloppy. On the first few days before the presentation it made me nervous that I wouldn’t get it done. At first I panicked, but then once I got an idea for my writing, I kept going.

Even though the conference was a pain to do, I think it was a better way for teachers to learn more about you and help you fix some of your problems. I’m proud of my presentation and I think my parents and teacher enjoyed it. I liked doing the presentation (and I think presenting is my talent) but I think the only hard part was getting prepared for it.

My top volunteer job by Zoe

Blogging challenge #6

My top volunteer job would be to work at an animal shelter. I want to do that job so I can be with animals for the whole day and help keep them happy and healthy.  I like to be with pets because they are like friends to me. Pets are like humans except with four legs, claws, paws, or fins. I wish I knew what animals were thinking so I could understand them more easily.

I actually tried to volunteer at an animal shelter but the law said that I could NOT do it until I was 18 years old (due to the risk of biting animals). I wanted to do the volunteer job badly and I was upset that I couldn’t do it.

I don’t want to have a pet at home because I would have to train it a lot, brush its fur, go around the house five times a day just to make sure there’s no pet fur on you furniture, take it for walks, and of course GIVE IT SOME ATTENTION. If I have a truck load of homework, I wouldn’t be able to do anything with my pet until the middle of the night, and that would be unfair to the pet. That’s why volunteering at an animal shelter is perfect for me because I can be with animals and not have too much responsibility for them.

My observation poem- by Zoë

Thunder, snow, leaves, rain, all the seasons seem the same.
The weather is confusing, changing every second.
No animals or bugs approached me, not even a bee.
The silence of the place made me walk quietly.
Even though the place looked quite eerie to me,

We walked to get the mail before the thunderstorm came near us too suddenly.
I think I heard some thunder in a big loud clap.
I jumped over a stream of excess water and got our mail.
But as soon as I closed the lid I saw lightning which made me turn pale.
We took all our belongings and left nothing behind.
We ran with rain in our faces all the way home, trying to stay alive.

Book talk – by Zoë

If you’ve moved to a new place, it might not be as pleasing if you were Kit. In The Witch of Blackbird Pond ( by Elizabeth George Spear), Kit moves to a Puritan community from Barbados after her grandpa dies. She has a lot of trouble adjusting to her new life. At first, her life seems to be ruined when people accuse her of being a witch, but then good things come out of it. Kit meets new friends and learns new things. She even meets a young girl named Prudence and helps her in many ways. Going to the new community changed her life. Read The Witch of Blackbird Pond to find out more.

100 Word Challenge by Zoë

I opened the door to a Thanksgiving party and remembered last year’s party. It started when we were sitting in the living room, waiting for dinner. We heard a crash coming from the dining room. We ran in to see what happened and noticed all the food had been stolen. Someone said, “We should search for the food.” I noticed tracks on the floor that didn’t seem to be human and heard a groan from outside. Outside with flashlights we saw my dog fatter than ever and stuck in his doghouse. The moral: never invite a hungry animal to Thanksgiving.

Challenge #10 by Zoë

Challenge #10

I wrote eight posts and one is awaiting approval by my teacher. Three posts are school based, and four are for the Blogging challenge.

In total I have 54 comments. The post that I received most comments on was my “No School-by Zoe”. I think that post received the most comments because it caught peoples’ attention. I also think it got the most comments because some people had some similar things happen to them and some the complete opposite.

The post I enjoyed writing the most was “Challenge #9 by Zoe”.  I had the most fun writing my “Challenge #9” post because I love to draw and my friend always teaches me new ways to draw manga.

Yes, my teacher did change our blog theme to a picture of terracotta warriors. I think she changed it to make the blog look more interesting and not just have it be one color.

Our class blog has several widgets, including  twitter, a visitor map, a sitemeter, blogging challenge badges and a flag counter. I think it’s a good amount for now but after reading someone else’s post I think we should have a virtual pet too. I know other blogs have virtual pets and they are fun for lots of people so I wish we had one.

Our class blog has nine overseas classes in our blogroll.

Challenge #9

Drawing is my favorite thing to do. I like to draw because it’s like “taking a picture” with my eye and “printing it out” when I draw. When I draw it feels like I’m creating a whole new world, and in that world, it can be anything I want it to be. From strange monsters to common cartoon characters that can be seen every day, and they can be anywhere. I can create anything by drawing if I keep practicing, and practicing, and practicing. There’s always something new to learn, so if you think you know everything about drawing your probably way, off.
One particular type of art that I like is Manga. What is Manga you ask? Manga is a popular type of Japanese art. It’s very much like the Japanese version of common cartoon shows such as The Looney Toons are in America. There are various versions of Manga and none of them are easy to draw. One of the styles is called Chibi. Chibi is a tinier version of manga. To describe it better, people are about ¼ the size of their normal sizes but their heads are huge compared to their bodies.
Manga is getting popular all over the world and even people who are not related to Asians are staring to draw using it. There are many books, websites, and videos that tell how to draw manga. One of them is:  Dragoart.com

The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind – By Zoë

I like several things about The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, by William Kamkwamba. One is that it has a lot of details and description. It also tells some stories that William’s father told him It also  told a lot about the life that William lived  (his house, people, history, superstitions, his family or other important people from the country etc.). I was easily able to imagine the pictures of what events happened and what things looked like.

An important thing was that was very useful in the book was that there was great vocabulary of African terms and a short definition of what they meant. The book also told about William’s problems in the story and how he or his parents fixed them. It really helps me understand what they meant more easily. I really like this book so far and I hope you like it too!

No School – by Zoë

No School

A few days ago (two days before Halloween to be exact), a snowstorm came to my town. It snowed about nine inches and knocked a lot of people’s power out. Luckily it wasn’t the worst storm ever. I was also one of the very few people to have a generator, so I had power on most appliances in my house. It was still a little scary because some parts of the house (like the stairs) were very dark and it was hard to see. The most interesting thing about the storm was that all the seasons seemed to be in one day: the snow of winter, the leaves of fall, the grass of summer, and the birds of spring.

On Halloween, I went trick-or-treating on my best friend’s street which had lots of power (my neighborhood’s power was still out at the time). My friend’s neighborhood has many more trick-or-treaters than mine. I go there every year and I get a lot of candy. One special thing about trick-or treating this year was that there was snow on the ground.

My power was out for four days, but my school took longer to gets its power back. We had no school while we waited. My friends and I talked on our computers when we didn’t have school. We said that it felt like we were sick since we’d been out for almost a week. To me, it felt like I was on vacation or we didn’t have school anymore.

I wanted to go back to school because it’s a fun way I can see my friends in person. During the first two days it was pretty fun, but then it got really boring because it seemed as if there was nothing to do. I am now glad that we are back in school because it keeps me busy and helps me learn new things.

Challenge #5 by Zoe

My class did challenge #5  in the Student Blogging Challenge. Challenge #5 was to do one of ten activities and use images that you rather made yourself, or ones that photographers said you could re-use. I made an Animoto video about puppies. To find images I could reuse, I used the advanced search on Google Images. I made sure that I could reuse the images by checking the licenses. We learned what licenses meant and what you can and can’t do with certain images. We also learned that we have to give attribution to the photographers . Please click on the play button if you want to see my video.

The attribution links might be hard to read so you may want to pause the video it for a better view.
