In my family, we do a basic Christmas celebration. On my mom’s side we pick a theme for the presents. This year, we picked a color (purple) and the presents have to be purple. On my dad’s side, it is normal gift giving for Christmas. This year I am not getting any gifts from my relatives because I asked them to give to penguinpower.info (my website), which helps the penguins of Mystic Aquarium.

My family also spends a lot of time on holiday photo cards. My dad is completely obsessed with taking pictures throughout the year for this card. For the last two years, I have done my own card for family and friends. This year, I did a penguin card to for my donors and friends.

In addition to the holiday fun, we take a trip. It has always been inside of America and it is a mystery trip. My dad plans it, but doesn’t tell us where we are going. He tells us what stuff we need to pack. Most of the time we go to different parts of Florida and we normally include a penguin encounter.

This year, I am very excited because I am working on a special penguin project with Mystic Aquarium for the holidays. You will need to visit my blog in January to see what we did.

What I do During the Holiday Season! By Olivia

   Holiday blog post

During Christmas , my family goes to NYC. We get there on Christmas eve and sleep at my aunt and uncle’s house.  My aunt Polly makes a wonderful dinner, and we all eat. I love celebrating Christmas because it’s a fun way to get together with family members. After we sleep over at their house, my grandmother and grandfather ( on my mom’s side ) come over. Once my grandparents have arrived we can open our stockings! I love opening stockings because you never know what you’re going to get. We have a big breakfast and then we open presents! I like seeing people’s faces when they open the gift I gave to them. This year I am not only going to go to NYC, but I am going to Florida as well! In Florida I am going to see my grandmother, aunt and uncle ( on my dad’s side), and it will be so much fun. While we’re in Florida, we are going to Universal studios! I really love Christmas and I am excited for this one.

My Holiday By Violet

During the holiday season, my family celebrates Hanukkah. My part of the family isn’t religious like the other part of our family, neither my sister or I went to hebrew school or are having Bat Mitzvahs. On the eight days, we light each candle on the menoura  night by night and give presents to each other. Traditionally, every night we’re supposed to say a prayer; instead we just say it the first night because we only know one of the prayers. We sometimes spin dreidels and play the game (even though we barely know how). Hanukkah is celebrating the rededication of the Holy Temple. We give each other chocolate coins called gelt, which now come in lots of flavors.

Holiday post: What Does My Family Do For Christmas?

What my family has been doing since I was 7 years old is to go to my best friend’s house because he always has a Christmas Eve party. What we do there is celebrate Christmas, eat a lot of dinner and eat more dessert. Then my best friend’s uncle who is really good at playing the piano and my best friend plays the saxophone. So what they do? They perform a song together in front of everybody. My Aunt, Uncles, Cousin, and Grandma all come to our house before the party and they stay on Christmas Eve and celebrate Christmas with us.  After the party we go back to my house and go to bed. Whenever I go to bed on Christmas Eve I always stay up in my bed all night because I just want to get out of bed and open all the presents. Then finally when it’s the morning I’m always the first one out of bed and it’s so annoying because my grandma always sleeps in till like 9:30. Then we open all the presents and celebrate.

Holiday Celebrations – Eden

This year I am really excited for break.

Every year I celebrate Christmas with my family. This year my grandfather is coming to celebrate with me, and my family. Every year on Christmas Eve we go to church at night (around 8:00) and sing Christmas carols with everyone. Usually people go to church at midnight but since I have two little sisters I have to go to the earlier mass. I am really hoping that it is going to be a white christmas.

My birthday is two days after Christmas (December 27). My uncle and my cousins are coming on my birthday. We are going to have our big Christmas feast on that day because we will be with more family. One of the main dishes that we make as a family is my great grandmother’s (on my mothers side) cracker filling. We usually have the cracker filling on thanksgiving but since we were at my grandmother and grandfather’s (on my dads side) apartment for thanksgiving we did not. I am sooo excited for my birthday.

This year for the New Year I am going to Brooklyn to watch the ball drop (on TV). we are going to  maybe go out to dinner at a fancy place. I am going to sleep the night at my godparents house and maybe take a midnight walk around the city after the ball drops. In the morning we will probably go to the bagel shop, because it is a tradition. We will walk around the city for the rest of the day. At the end of the day we go home and go to bed early.

No School!!!!! by Erik

For three straight days now I have had no school!  Why?  Because of a little snow storm that knocked down a tree on to some cables so now our school has no power, for now.  What have I been doing you may ask so let me tell you about what I did.
On Sunday, the day of the snow storm, I was supposed to have a football game but it got “snowed out.”  It would have been our first playoff game.  We were going to play White Plains who beat us 31-0 two weeks ago. We lost power that day too at about 7:00pm.  Luckily we have a huge generator that can heat my entire house and give us electricity so we could watch t.v or cook dinner.  The bad part was that our generator had a problem so my dad and I went out to fix it.  It took an hour to fix but it was fun.  The only thing I had to do was shine a flash light on the generator so my dad could fix it.
On Monday I didn’t do anything all day.  I just did my usual stuff like play outside, video games, skype friends and etc.  This year I wasn’t prepared for Halloween so I didn’t go trick or treating.  I was going to be a turtle but I didn’t find anything to use for the shell.
On Tuesday, I invited my friends Charlie and Clay to come over to my house (they both go to my school).  We played outside and ate donuts all day long and had lots of fun.  We also played with Nerf guns.  It was Charlie and me vs. Clay.  I didn’t realize how good Clay was at Nerf because he beat us.  He was hiding in my bushes and using a rifle all the time.  Charlie and I tried sneaking up behind him but he was everywhere!  It was super fun.
On Wednesday, even if there was school I would have missed the first half of the day because I had an Orthodontist appointment.  It was just a check up though.  My teeth really hurt afterwards because they tightened my braces.
It was very fun and exciting at first to have no school, but then it got very boring after a couple of days.  This experience made me think about how much we need technology.
